I actually played FFXI before too. At this point it was quite a few years ago, but it was still late in the game's life that soloing most content was doable, and even then when I got to higher levels it was easy to find people to grind with. I only played for the first free month and got about halfway through the campaign, but a lot of what I did was inefficient.

The bonus stuff in FF4 was really cool because you could use other party members in the end game. It just makes no sense to cut this content in what they're trying to market as the definitive versions of these games, unless they're planning to do another release in a couple of years, or some paid DLC

Yeah, IV is really my only drawback from the Steam remasters.

That said, I did purchase the pack anyway since I feel like those versions will be fine for the other games. I do feel like IV's bonus content is worth perhaps doing something different when it comes time to play it, but we'll see.

Despite buying the pack, I will still probably opt to play 3's 3D remake version since it names the characters and has a more cohesive storyline you can follow. Excited to start playing the first game some time soon!

The attempt at giving the characters names/backstories in the 3 remake is actually pretty inconsequencial after the early parts of the game.

I think this is overstated but w/e

Like the only difference is the first few hours have more dialogue because you encounter each party member one by one. After this point the stories are identical.

I posted this in another topic-
Just looked up the Pixel Remaster games

Having Achievements is great and makes me want to get them
But they don't have turbo mode so that makes GBA emulator versions better for me I guess...

It's kind of cheating..I guess. I am really not sure if Emulators features can be taken into consideration when deciding "best version of a game" but it's important to me
Turbo and Save States are very important QoL features imo

How are the new mobile versions? I was going to get them but the price points seem high, especially with the steam versions being on sale already

Solid, with amazing updated music. No controller support for some reason, but I expect it will be patched eventually. Missing any new content from various ports but eh.

As someone who previously stood by FF Origins as the definitive way to play FF1, I can now also endorse the pixel remaster release as an alternative.

And more importantly, FF3 pixel remaster is now BY FAR the definitive way to legally play this game in English.

I heard pixel remaster is still based on the Easy mode. If so then that's not it for me.

Final Fantasy XI: Have other people doing similar projects bothered with this entry? I know XIV has really hit its stride and certainly we plan to include that, but this game never had the foothold or respect XIV has gained I feel. But... it's a numbered entry, and it feels wrong to deny it. How much of a commitment is this? Obviously MMOs are huge time sinks, but I'm more interested in experiencing the world and NPCs the game has to offer.
11's plotlines are absolutely fantastic and you'd be doing yourself a disservice by ignoring the game entirely. 11 might not be 14 level of renown, but 14 right now is literally eclipsing WoW. The game's doing really well for a ps2 era "dead" MMO; a few years back they did a final chapter and saying they're ending content updates, but the game's playerbase has just grown in size since then, mostly because they've made the game so incredibly accessible while still managing to keep it the same.

If you know where to look, levelling to 99 and unlocking the various plotlines should only take a few days. At the very least you need to do Chains of Promathia (I personally liked Wings of the Goddess more, but I have a minority opinion here). It gets even easier if you're somewhat social and find a linkshell (guild but more informal) that's helpful; there's a lot of old players that would love to help newbies experience FFXI.

There are legitimately *so many* that if you're interested in actually changing the game significantly there's more than I could even think to describe. The mod scene for FF7 is insane.

If you're looking more for a purist approach like I did (basically just getting the best version of the original game possible) then 100% go with The Reunion and Satsuki Yatoshi's Upscale Mod. The Reunion is several mods packaged together, some of which you may want to turn off like updated models, framerate tweaks and a difficulty mod.

The stuff from Reunion you'll definitely want are a vastly improved script, myriad fixes for menus and a complete audio overhaul. Satsuki's mod is a deep learning pass on all of the game's pre-rendered backgrounds and cutscenes, producing some really fantastic results. Combine all of that stuff and you've got a completely brilliant way of reexperiencing the game.

You must only mean aesthetically because the later releases are still just as primitive as far as the actual game design goes.
