I'm nearly finished with the story.

World of Final Fantasy is one of those games I haven't been able to put down since I started it. It's cute, it's funny, and it's incredibly addictive.

The gameplay captures everything that's good about turn-based combat, with the option to choose between active-time and true turn-based combat depending on your preference. And while monster collecting in Final Fantasy games can be a bit of a drag, the monster collection aspect of this game is excellent. It's fun to capture monsters, and the process of levelling them up and unlocking their skills is incredibly addictive. I really didn't like this mechanic in X-2, and I remember it being okay but a necessary evil more than anything else in XIII-2 - but in WoFF, they've nailed everything that a monster collecting RPG needs to be.

I've probably spent 3 hours engrossed in menus, levelling my monsters and cashing in their Mirage Board points. It's a similar sort of addiction that the Sphere Grid from X instilled in me.

World of Final Fantasy is gorgeous. The character models? Fantastic. The environments? Amazing. Everything about the characters is so well-done, from the way everyone's animated to the way they're voiced. All of the monster models are smooth and clean, even on the Switch port. The cutscenes vary between hilarious, adorable and creepy.

The only potential downside is your companion Tama, who's this cute little fox thing who floats along after you. Tama has this the-little tic where the-every so often, she'll the-preface a bunch of her words with -the. Saying that, the VA manages to blend it in naturally about 50% of the time - and whether you hate that or not, Tama is fucking adorable and I LOVE HER.

This applies to some of the characters like Princess Goblin. Either you're going to be annoyed at their goofy, shrieky antics, or you're going to get a huge kick out of them.

And I like Lann and Reynn too - they're the main human characters you play as. I can see people hating Lann for being a complete and utter moron, and I can see the neckbeards accusing Reynn of being a Mary Sue, but I feel like the intrigue of their story is enough to keep them fresh, and I like seeing how they adapt to Grymoire. And at the end of the day, it's just a fun little romp, y'know. It's fun.

One thing this game did incredibly well is the codex entries and the tips and stuff. None of it takes itself seriously. All of the monster descriptions are taking the piss, and it breaks the fourth wall all the time. It's like a less obnoxious Borderlands in that sense. It's snarky, but not so up its own ass that all it has to offer is Snappy Reference. It's trying to be cute, instead of trying to be cool.

I'm doing a piss poor job of justifying why World of Final Fantasy is good. I'll leave you with two statements.

World of Final Fantasy is one of those games where if you've had it on your watchlist for a while and you're not sure when to start it up, you will probably enjoy it right away when you do get to it. The tone it sets helps ease some of the tutorialitis that most games have nowadays, and once you get started - with one particular false start - you're off to the races. It's got a low barrier of entry, and I would recommend it if you've been on the fence about it.

The Switch port is FANTASTIC. The graphical style applies perfectly to the system, the load times are pretty brief, there's like one place in the game with visible slowdown from some residual particle effects but it's highly situational. The game still looks gorgeous, and it runs like butter. Genuinely - this is one of the smoothest Switch ports on the system.

That's all I have to say. If you want a goofy, cheery, all-ages game to unwind with or share with the family, World of Final Fantasy is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. It's the best game I've played all year.

Its kinda hard to start it because of how obnoxious reyn and lann are, but they grow on you when they actually start maturing as people as the story goes.

I still need to finish the DLC for it though

The real downside is that the game might have one of the worst minigames in any FF game, fucking sand stalker...

The game had the best portrayal of Cloud in a spinoff too.

Tho the worst for Squall.

I can see how that'd be the case for some people. Personally, I just took Lann and Reynn as more exaggerated Kingdom Hearts characters, and it was a non-issue once I understood their roles.

Sand Stalker can gargle chode though, Christ. And the requirements for the Maduin memento is horseshit.

Cloud is a bit lightweight, but he's not all Advent Children-ish, for sure. And yeah, Squall is lightweight in a whole other way. Dude has no personality at all.

Its just good. Its a better RPG for a younger group because the mains literally act like stupid kids throughout.

Id prefer the Maxima versions versus ps4+ Maxima because so much extra dlc characters were jammed in there.

Is there anything faster to ride than police Magiteck Armor? Ps4 users still need the demo to get it and i restarted for it cause it was worth it.

You're lucky I already read that this was gonna be a thing. I haven't finished the main story, and this is at the end of one of the post-game dungeons.

The best part about this game is that if you're not in the mood, it's easy to pick up and drop. I dropped Persona 5 Strikers recently, and I already know it's gonna be a massive pain in the ass to get back into when I go back to it. But when I drop into WoFF, there's a little blurb telling me where to go and I can orient myself fairly quickly. If I were to leave this game and do something else for a while, I know I'm not gonna get lost or disinterested.

I'm the sort of person who schedules out games depending on what else I'm playing, how big of a commitment I think I'm gonna need etc. I put off WoFF for months because I thought it was gonna be a big commitment and I needed to prepare to push through it at all costs. But once I started playing, I found it really hard to stop. It clicks almost instantly, and I feel like I could leave it for a month and jump right back into it.

The main story is like 30 hours, and there's very little fat to trim. Beyond that point, there's still a ton of sidequests and post-game content to enjoy if you like the gameplay. If you've already got it, or if you have a copy lined up easily enough, I would honestly recommend just taking the plunge and seeing where it takes you.

Oh yeah, this is an all-ages game for sure. It's not gonna be for everyone, but it's easy to take in and go along with.

That being said, the referential humor and fourth wall breaking is a serious treat for older players. I'm eating that shit up.

And yeah - I'm playing on Switch, which is a fantastic way to play. If you're gonna play WoFF, you're better off getting Maxima - it goes on sale for a very reasonable price, and it's the definitive way to play the game.

Yeah, I surprisingly had a really good time with it.

My biggest complaint is that the story gets a little Kingdom Heartsish at some points but it's nowhere near as bad in that regard. The difficulty spikes are a minor complaint too. It's never insurmountable by any means but it will wobble from cakewalk to somewhat challenging quite a bit.

Oddly, I felt It's a little too long as well. Which I realize is kind of a dumb complaint, but I feel that could've been mitigated with better pacing or something.

Cowgirl Tifa gets me every time. I love that they specifically chose that version of her.

My umbrage with the game is that there are hundred(?) of mons to play with, but you only have 4 in your party at a time.

Also the stacked tower mechanic is better 90% of the time than the wide array, so most of the time it's a 2-member party a la a very customizable version of FF:MQ, and then you'll want to juggle size aspects as well which further narrows the monster pool.

I liked that the final form isn't nessesarily the best choice for monsters since you need one of each size.

I thoroughly enjoyed the game but they took too long to release the update.

Those parts do drag, I'll give you that. And if you die halfway up, you get sent all the way to the bottom again, which can be soul-crushing. If there's any point to lose interest, those two sections are the most understandable.

The game really picks up right after that, at the next town. But at that point, you've played through two areas of the game and met three legacy FF characters, so if you weren't hooked, you weren't hooked. That's fair enough.
