60 y/o Mark Herring was the victim of a "swatting" in April 2020 when he was targeted for his coveted "Twitter" handle and demanded he hand it over or else died when he had a HEART ATTACK after he went outside and saw police outside with guns aimed at him!!

He was targeted by Shane Sonderman who wanted his twitter handle @Tennessee where both of them lived.

Shane and another were both minors when they concocted the elaborate prank to extort him to obtain his handle

His daughter, Corrina Finch said he picked the handle because of his love for the Volunteers at the University of Tennessee football team and was well aware of his special internet property and brag about the many offers he got for it

But he was not willing to sell no matter the price leading to the strange events that led to his death

In April 2020, his daughter received a pizza delivery intended for her dad at her home. Her sister, Katie Hooge and their mother, Fran Herring who live across town each got a pizza meant for Mark.

She called her Dad who didn't respond and sent him a FB to tell him what was going on until her sister messaged her stating she got a pizza meant for their dad too.

She thought it wa a prank but they knew something was wrong when they got a text from her father's girlfriend who said she was in a cop car and she had to go.

Earlier that day they got an anonymous call that demanded he hand over his twitter handle OR ELSE and when Mark refused, that's when the swatted happened

His neighbor got a call and said police were everywhere because they got a report of a man who killed a woman is on Mark's property

Mark came out with his own gun and a loud speaker was heard yelling if he was Mark Herring and to put his hands up. Mark does and tosses the gun away but in that moment he presses his hand on his heart and has a heart attack where he died on scene.

They believe he was scared to death and that was what cause dit

Sonderman collected the entire family's personal information and sent pizza's to all of them as an intimidation tactic

Another minor in the United Kingdom was also in on the scheme but he wasn't extradited because he was a minor but is now an adult and is now behind bars awaiting trial

The family calls it legit extortion for 3K-4K was not worth a life as they warn parents to watch their children before they do something like this again.

Now 18, Sonderman was said to have swatted 6 victims across the country and faces 5 years and a conspiracy charge of 250,000

Should these kids have their lives destroyed or should they get another chance?

Swatting should carry a 10-20 year prison term even if no one gets hurt during it. It's roughly about the same as yelling FIRE in a crowded theater and the damage and chaos that could cause.

Was this a no knock raid? The OP said he walked out of his house with a gun then had a heart attack. It doesn't look like they entered his home at all. This is one of the rare cases where it actually doesn't seem like the police share fault.

Yeah (well, the 10 years, anyway), although unfortunately a lot of the perps are minors which causes an issue.

On a broader level, it's ridiculous that e-thugs are shaking people down for names, but even if they didn't want to use it, the name itself is worth money.

They're likely not irredeemable, but clearly they need to some time and may belong in a mental institution if there was a way to teach empathy.

You used to be able to find out about anyone you want on the phone, you'd jus memorize all of the phone codes and tap into other peoples conversations and then jus call them and pretend you have the credentials if you have a code book
this group of teenagers had this blind kid do it one time, he was still able to do everything from his jail cell if he had a phone, he'd also change his voice when talking to people
he would even enter the codes by whistling through the phone at a really high pitch like a dog whistle and it'd totally work

There's something very wrong with people who think swatting is okay to do. And over something as pathetic as a username too, if I understand right. Swatters are clearly fucked in the head.

Its not harmless or clever, they're clearly old enough to know what could happen to their victims.
