There used to be a time when teenagers and young adults would say something is 'gay' to refer to something or someone they disliked.

I'm mixed. I can understand why people were against it, but in some ways it felt like gypped where it's usage had grown pretty detached from it's origin.

I feel like there were ways it worked as a not hurtful joke like Chang in community or the Shaun of the Dead joke, but at the same time I can understand why we moved away from it.

Same thing goes for the r-word, probably moreso. It was convenient to have a word for "profoundly and humorously dumb" and it was clear that nobody was ever actually referring to mentally disabled people with that word.

Conan used to say it all the time. And I don't think of Conan as being evil or insensitive.

I understand moving away from some of these things, and maybe it's because I didn't see any hurt caused by them up close, but I still get kinda sentimental for what seemed like playful harmless uses of them.

I'm trying to think if there's an equivalent for something that is relevant to me and how I relate to it. I don't mind fat jokes, nerd jokes, or even jokes about depression or even a person killing themselves, despite me losing my brother to that.

This one simpsons joke did feel like a bit much to me, particularly when it happened relatively soon after my brother, but also because I don't think it works that well as a joke.

its being openly said less in areas with consequences and censorship

I hear it all the time at work, at home, etc.

Thing is, though, people are going to make a conscious effort to NOT say stuff you don't approve of around you(if they like you). Especially as you get older and get closer and closer with friends.

Everyone at my Pizza Hut says it pretty casually.

It's mostly street slang where I'm from. It's normal here. If LeBron misses a three pointer, my friend would say "that was gay". But yea....among friends and family is when it's used often.

Back in college I had a gay friend that used to use "gay" as slang for something dumb. It was kinda funny to hear it from him >_>

Also, I'm pretty sure it still happens in middle school and high school >_> You just don't hear it cuz we're old as fuck and disconnected from today's youth.

You're totally wrong about this. It's still used. I work at a Middle school. The new thing now kids say if they think someone is doing something "gay" in their eyes is say "thats sus". I had literally had to ban the word "sus" from my fourth period because they would say it all the time to each other.

I highly doubt your administration would approve of you banning that term, what is the punishment if a kid says it? Ive been teaching 16 years, the best way to get a class to turn on you is to tell them what not to do.

Thats sus is absolutely NOT a replacement for thats gay, sus is a blanket term the kids use for anything suspicious.

Example: I saw you with that girl at the movies, thats sus, someone is going to tell your girlfriend.

Edit: while it CAN be used in place of gay, its not an actual replacement, and if you really are a teacher, you must not be a very perceptive one.

Oh, so you must be one of those people who think ignorant is an insult when used in the context of someone not being aware of something.

If a person teaches adolescents and teens, and cant keep up with their changing slang, so much so that they are banning terms they dont understand, that would indicate they arent very perceptive. That is hardly an insult, go troll elsewhere.

"Sus" is not because of Among Us. It's very old AAVE, meaning suspecting someone might be gay.

All that other stuff came way later.

Calling a person ignorant is often thought of a label for a person. You can say "they are ignorant about something" or "that is an ignorant position", but yes "you are ignorant" is generally thought of as somewhat of an insult.

Like it's not a huge deal, I just thought your comment was a bit oddly hostile towards that person.

No, what I'm saying is that it's AAVE and it's still used as a word to suspect someone is gay. I was just saying it originated long ago.

People might try to use it as a blanket "suspect", but that's not the meaning wrt AAVE, since the meaning hasn't changed.

And AAVE itself is huge with young people nowadays, hence the 50 million other terms they've jacked and use constantly.

You fucking don't know how teaching works. All it takes is one kid complaining about being bullied and I get in trouble for not doing anything. My students were using it as an insult to each other and it became a trend so I said no. There was an LGBT kid in that period who claimed he was bi.

I also told them no political conversations in my class. Things got tense with the Trump/Biden race and the kids would love to get hostile with each other over that. I told them it's a fucking math class so no talking about Trump and they can talk about whatever they want at lunch when I'm not watching.

Yeah, I got that. I was explaining how it's still in use with people who speak AAVE. You're assuming young people are all getting it from just Among Us and assuming they're not saying it in it's common deragatory way because of that, and that they're not getting it from where they're getting all their slang from.

Again, what is the punishment if a student talks about one of your banned topics? If its not in the Student Code of Conduct, you are going to have a hard time getting any support.

Kids talk about what they want to talk about, I agree as an educator we should be providing enlightenment on inclusivity, but your method of controlling language is counterintuitive. If they are being disruptive with outbursts, use the progressive discipline method: redirect the negative behavior, move the student, have a conference in private, call the parent, involve a dean, in that order. If, after five attempts, you still have a problem with that child, you have done your job, let someone else do theirs, its not your place to outright censor language YOU deem inappropriate.

Dude it wasn't really a big deal in the class. I explained why "sus" could be perceived as offensive and there was some pushback but not really. The trend kinda died on its own.

And all it really takes to get them to behave is tell them I won't let them play minecraft student edition on their free time or let them eat lunch in my room. The kids would want often want to each lunch in a teachers room at might school because admin in the cafeteria wouldn't let them use their phones. The kids generally like me so to get them not to say a word I find offensive is not the hardest thing in the world to do.

its usage as an insult has been and always will be tied to how people think of gay people. It's hard to feel comfortable coming out as gay when the people you know use the word so negatively. It's literally the same word. Acting like using gay as an insult doesn't actually muddle negative connotations about gay people is just stupid. It does, and when I hear somebody use it I just assume they're stupid
