Best era for animation?

out of them all only maybe courage is a classic that still holds up to day. shows like catdog, johny bravo, ed edd eddy were cool but you have to admit they made no sense, and ddint teach any lessons at all to the viewer. I think they got worse after that but in recent years there's been some of the best cartoons ever even though I'm just too old to still watch them myself.

I voted 90s but my personal preference is the 80s but its not better in terms of animation than the 90s.

at the same time i get that i'm vouching for the well-made thematic shorts of old-school Hollywood over the ambitious projects of more recent eras, which were not a thing back then, and i'm not against those either

some 80s cartoons are good but as the now-infamous John K has pointed out, studios were pressured to keep recycling and reusing the same plots again and again, e.g., the evil twin episode, the 'bad guy pretends he's seen the error of his ways' episode. that's a big reason why many of the cartoons from that era are not just bad but unwatchable

the 90s is quite the mixed bag because some of the cartoons are straight up brilliant and contain ideas they would have zero chance of getting away with now, but some of the shows i 'grew up' with are so incredibly awful in hindsight that i'd feel embarrassed trying to watch them now, even accepting that i'm no longer near being in the target demographic

i kinda stopped paying much attention to cartoons going into this century. i've been told that kids shows have become over the top sociopolitical but i don't pay enough attention to know one way or another

Avatar the Last Airbender was 2005.

But for me I think the 2010s. That will probably change as the 2020s continue, but hot damn there's some amazing stuff that's come out in the last decade.

i guess another consideration is if we're focusing on family-friendly cartoons or stuff specifically targeted to older adults, because you weren't exactly going to have The Simpsons or King of the Hill in the 1940s

edit: let alone something like South Park or Rick and Morty, can you imagine o_O

90s saw a lot of innovation with South Park entering the field, along with some cool 3d stuff in the vein of Beast Wars and Reboot. Anime was getting exported/imported a la Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon, and then we had the SImpsons hittind their stride as well.

Top things out of the 00's are Family Guy, Invader Zim, and Jimmy Neutron imo.

I mean, what else did you expect? Most people here grew up during the 90's so cartoons from the 70's/80's were old to them and then most of them grew out of watching cartoons by the 2010's so they can't really judge them.

Ergo, the only option for them is the 90's.

I think Adventure Time ruined a whole generation of cartoons if i'm being honest.

Not that it was a bad show, it was great in its early seasons. But it created the sentiment cartoons need to have some ongoing episodic plot to be engaging to viewers, and now there are a ton of cartoons following in its wake, trying to be just like it, to varying quality. Gravity Falls was good, the Ducktales reboot tried too hard. I can't take any of these shows seriously with their artstyle or the fact they're still made for children, yet try to be "adult" in a way.

Talk shit about Xialin Showdown. But characters going through development and episodes having continuity was great.

90s TV syndication was generally a mess and you had just as many reruns as premiers and shows played out of order all the time. That's why there was less series continuity and more "monster of the week" shows

I've ironically come to appreciate episodic shows more as an adult. Oftentimes, I just want to kill 20 minutes to relax and I wanna flip something on.

It feels funny to sit down and watch some highly plot-driven shows, for a lone episode that ends in a cliffhanger every time, and where every episode just exists to pump up the next one.

90s for me.

Peak Simpsons/KotH, Disney Afternoon, One Saturday Morning, Kids WB, Fox Kids, Sonic SatAM, Nickelodeon had tons of cartoons instead of just Spongebob, most of CNs Cartoon Cartoons premiered (even if they bled into the 00s), anime gained a foothold, TMNT bled over from the 80s, etc

Really, the death of Saturday Morning and after school cartoon blocks signaled the end of my childhood.
