Woman: "So what are you looking for in a relationship"
Me: "I'm really just looking for a companion"

Sounds like an extremely reasonable followup question.

She's asking for specifics to see if you're compatible with her own desires for a romantic future.

Well that's just it. I'm not sure there is an issue with what she's asking.

And I'm not sure I have an answer. Do I need one?

Yeah, you should have an idea of what type of partner you would like.

I mean, if you're new to dating, it's whatever. But if you've been dating around you should be doing self reflection.

Like in a legal sense? Should I just say "I'm looking for a forever" and have that be it?

I mean yeah, I get the idea of "anything that moves" is probably a turn-off. My dating experiences can be counted on one hand.

Probably level of commitment, what you like in an ideal partner, how serious you want to be, etc.

Like are you looking for love or are you just looking for someone that you guys can file for taxes jointly and get more money back or whatever.

Your answer was basically the equivalent to walking into the restaurant and when the waiter comes over you say "I would like one plate of food please".

I'm fairly certain the waiter would ask you to be a little more specific.

My apartment doesn't allow dogs but fuck if that doesn't describe my lack of focus when it comes to dating partners throughout my twenty-plus years being eligible.

Tell her what you want to do in relationship and the type of lady you are looking for. I know it too late now , but for next time.

It is a hard question so I would try something like this,...

I am looking for a lady, how really enjoys doing nothing. I know that sounds silly. But if you have someone who you can just set around and watch TV with that is just like so great. For her personality, I would want to make sure that he is a nice person, you can be as fine as hell but if you are not nice that is a deal breaker. Someone who doesn't mind singing in public.

That is a hard question.

This is about where I come to the realization that mid-morning on a work day is probably not the best time to have these kinds of introspective crises.

And I probably could have picked a better place, no offense to anyone trying to be constructive.

I mean, you can just be honest and say you don't have too much experience and are still exploring what you want.

But I still think with your handful of experiences you should reflect. Are there things in the past that you really made you think "this could be someone I stick with long term?" Are common interests important to you? If so, which interests are most important to have in common? Do you want a partner who is going to be more independent and career focused? Or someone who wants to put focus on family? Etc.

So like I feel there are things I do want given what I've experienced with other women.

It's just one of those things I never... wrote down? I guess?

Like I want independent, right? I don't want someone who's going to be relying on me, and I would promise the same in return.
I want someone I can have a difficult conversation with.
I want someone who can laugh at my stupid jokes.
I want someone who won't judge me for my hobby, but who can pull me back if I go too deep into it.
And I suppose in general I want someone who doesn't judge harshly in general, even to others.
I want someone who knows their ideals for the world they live in.

Let me think a little more.

You got put in the hot seat on a topic that you hadn't explicitly thought about too much. It's normal to freeze. Most people have done this type of reflection and essentially have a list of things pretty memorized.

Just be honest, however you answer it. Even about your experiences/lack of. Never have I been laughed at my any of my past gfs because of my lack of experience and anyone who would isnt someone youd want a relationship with anyway.

But the answers you were coming up with are definitely on the right track to a good answer that she was looking for.

well there is a difference in "what do you want in a relationship" and "what do you want in a partner?"

Relationship- spend time with someone and have fun
Is there really any other answer to that question? besides, someone to pay my bills and buy me stuff.

Partner-
Now this is where you need to know what you want....and can be many answers that are different than someone else's answers.
