I would have agreed with this, and then they made The Last Jedi. Its crazy that the prequels actually seem like decent movies when compared to the nonsense that was the sequel trilogy.

The Last Jedi has a ton of problems but it is still better than any of the prequels imo

I just find it fascinating that they made an entire trilogy without any kind of plan. They are definitely better acted for sure but it was wild how slapped together the story was, while I love my guy Palpatine there was absolutely no set up for him to be in the 9th movie. And I really didnt like the treatment of my guy Luke. Like goddamn they make the man milk a space cow and drink its green milk within 10 minutes of the movie.

If we're just limiting it to Anakin, Jake Lloyd is way more the worst than Hayden.

Granted, it's not entirely his fault, and I feel bad for him, but honestly, I will take wooden acting from Creepy Angsty Teen Anakin over "Holy fuck why did Lucas think this was a good idea" Annoying Brat Anakin every single day of the week.

If we compare both movies as a whole... I'd probably still go with AotC over TPM. There are too many little stupid moments in TPM, and Darth Maul being cool for about 45 seconds doesn't really counterbalance them. AotC winds up being more boring and pointless, but way less viscerally stupid.

AotC just kind of bores me, and I'll occasionally cringe at some of the particularly bad dialogue. TPM makes my brain want to eat itself.

We cant have everything. It really is a great scene though. It only lasts for about 30 seconds and its so much more engaging than the 20 minute Obi vs Anakin fight in RotS

This.

It's kind of cliche to point back to the RedLetterMedia reviews of the Prequels, but honestly, I kind of agree with the idea that fights that at least look somewhat "real" are far more engaging and interesting than the pre-choreographed acrobatic gymnastic demonstration nonsense of the Prequels.

I can appreciate the effort that went into planning out the scene, and the work the actors (or stunt doubles) put in to make it work, but in and of itself I usually find myself taken out of the movie and stop caring about what the story is trying to say when they happen. Because it's just two people walking their way through an endless progression of meaningless spins and twirls and pre-planned parries.

It's the difference between a Wushu weapon style exhibition, and legit trying to murder some dude you really hate with a pointy stick.

If anything, I might go with Luke in Return of the Jedi as the best fight, as it's most just psychological, playing cat and mouse, dueling with words as much as actions - followed by Luke just going full ham on Vader.

Especially this part:

http://youtu.be/LPESlIuej1I?t=274

It just MEANS so much more in that moment than literally anything that happens in the Prequels.

I do agree with this too, though. Because that entire sequence was just so utterly dull. After the first 5 minutes or so you're like, "Jesus, this isn't over yet?" It didn't leave me filled with a sense of wonder about all the awesome imagery and action, it just left me feeling kind of annoyed by how boring and pointless it all was.

Lucas clearly expects people to be going "Okay, this is the moment that makes everything worth it!", and I'm just like "What a waste of time."

Hell, I'd take this fight scene over pretty much anything in the Prequels. Even without the magic and laser swords:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC6dgtBU6Gs

It's still slightly on the wrong side of unrealistic, but it's not so ridiculously over the top that it becomes stupid.

If you find it interesting, this is a pretty good video to give a feel for what legit fighting would probably look like (more or less):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FR976PhMbDM
http://youtu.be/JOBTFfHJjV8?t=32

Worse, try watching something like Olympic-level fencing where both sides are trying to score on the other for "real", and you'll see that real fighting tends to look kind of boring, because it can easily be over before it even starts (especially if you're fighting with insta-cut laser beams).

I vastly prefer Luke wailing on Vader in Return of the Jedi.
Two vastly different fights. Luke v Vaders fighting isnt all that great but is enhanced by the story being told. Obi-wan v Maul is purely just combat only gaining purpose by qigong death. While it's a little shallow I would still prefer to watch it over Luke v Vader.

Always really liked anakin v ventress.

There's a big difference between "so bad it's good" and "so bad it's terrible", though.

Given the choice between watching something boring, and watching something that's so lame, cringe-inducing, and generally horrible that it makes me want to drill into my skull and lobotomize myself to escape the pain, I'm going to go with the boring option.

Actually, I'd go with the option where I don't watch either because I possess free will and the ability to choose not to watch things that are bad. Which, on a related note, is why I will never, ever play Final Fantasy VIII (the terrible option) or Final Fantasy XII (the boring option) again.
