Looking through a list of movies I've rated, which is nowhere near complete, I'm noticing a lot of movies tagged as horror that I wouldn't consider horror. Horror/Mystery/Thriller all seem to be kind of mixed together. Rather than pick which ones I consider horror and which I don't, here's my top ten from that list that have a horror tag attached to them.

Tremors
The Thing
10 Cloverfield Lane
28 Days Later
Cube
It
Alien
Misery
It Follows
Stir of Echoes

top 5 or 10 favorite horror films?
ooooh that's tricky because some are definitely in that iffy thriller area, but as far as mostly horror I think I'd say

Battle Royale
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
Donnie Darko
Misery
Mulholland Drive
Saw II
Scream
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet St.
The Lighthouse
The Silence of the Lambs

in no particular order, and even limiting to that was hard and I'm still unsure

thankfully i can just use the letterboxd/imdb genre tags although there were some discrepancies between the two. letterboxd lists Black Swan as Drama/Thriller/Horror but imdb doesn't include the horror tag. imdb has Under the Skin as Drama/Horror/Sci-Fi but letterboxd has it as Drama/Sci-Fi/Thriller.

those are two of my favorite movies but i've never actually thought of Black Swan as a 'horror' and Under the Skin is definitely more of a horror film than it. genre stuff can get pretty wonky in the long run whatever. My list actually ended up looking pretty fucking solid in that they're all film I really like and doesn't have films I only slightly like taking up spots just because of the 'horror' tag like I thought it would.

Under the Skin - absolutely my favorite for the time being. knowing how it was actually filmed and how it comes across in the performances is my favorite aspect of it.
American Psycho - i love how every comment on the youtube video for "It's Hip to Be Square" is just an American Psycho reference
Thirst - favorite vampire film
One Cut of the Dead - i couldn't believe how good this was when i watched it. would have loved to recommend this too for the topic at some point.
Funny Games - fuck
Jennifer's Body - iconic
Alien - it's Alien
Psycho - it's Psycho
mother!
Shaun of the Dead

i will cheat and say in case of alternates/genre wonkiness i could also see Climax, House or Frankenhooker in that list as well

It's Such a Beautiful Day - 10/10

Rewatched this, but I always knew what I'd give it because it's one of my all-time favorite movies. In fact, so far the only film from this group that beats it imo is probably Fargo. I absolutely adore everything about this.

a bit unclear on what i watched but i did overall like it. the music and atmosphere played such a big part and i liked the overall aesthetic. during the early parts i was like ok what is this girl a metaphor for after being reminded of another film and i actually forgot that 'vampires' were a thing. would like to give it a rewatch at some point. 6/10

The Guilty - 7/10

So I guess they don't build him up as sympathetic because he's kind of a shithead. Obviously he has his 'redemption' at the end, but that only takes place a few minutes after he essentially told another caller with an injured knee to go fuck himself so I don't really know how much he's changed.

I like the idea of all of the actors outside of the main character being off-screen. I assume this was done mostly because of covid and it was a lot easier to get everyone together if they didn't actually have to get everyone together, but it's unique nonetheless.

The twist would've been better if Henry wasn't acting completely clueless when Joe initially called him. You abduct your ex-wife, and then while driving down the road a cop calls you out of the blue and starts asking questions, and there's no anger or yelling? Way too much of a tip that something else was going on.

Feels like Joe would've worked better as a character, with the twist at the end that he killed someone, if he wasn't a dick to everyone around him for the entire rest of the movie.

I'll throw my late hat into the horror ring

The Shining - legendary for good reason, tone/atmosphere elevate a classic ghost story to a genre high
Lost Highway - for my money the creepiest Lynch movie
The Thing - for all the tension, paranoia, and vfx what gets me the most is the way the thing screams
Silence of the Lambs - the part where Clarice is in the dark and Bill has night-goggles? chills every time
Alien - Giger's design is timeless
The Fly - credit to the 80's emphasis on practical effects, that stuff made a big impression as a kid
Dead Alive - ultimate goofy gross-out horror from a green Peter Jackson
Night of the Living Dead - not a zombie guy but the old standard still impresses
The Ring - doesn't hold up but I have to respect how much it freaked me out as a kid
Wishmaster - a guilty pleasure, people wish for things and this genie fucks them over...that's it

It's Such a Beautiful Day

sorry to Mr. Hertzfelt but I found the narrating voice pretty offputting. and i feel bad because it's not like something you can just change. but anyway it kind of gave the whole film a more lighthearted jokey vibe for me which I wasn't into. I could actually see myself really loving this a few years ago with some of the random out-there lines. as for the existential depressing stuff it's mostly things i've thought about a lot in the past and not very keen to think about again. there was a time when i used to just enjoy wallowing in my misery but as the years go on i'm getting tired.

Not a good sign though that I kept pausing the movie to go randomly check b8 or reddit though. And even though it's just over an hour long, I was glad it wasn't longer. The line about how the grandmother just suddenly imagined throwing the child into the fireplace was probably the first time i thought i could get "in" to the movie because intrusive thoughts are pretty relateable. I do like the blending of animation and live-action and the fact that it takes advantage of that medium though which is always the first thing I look for in an animated film. But yeah maybe if I was in a different place for my first viewing. 5/10

Speaking of which, mal recently added an option to display lists in English, so at least I now have a much better idea of what exactly my plan to watch list consists of.

My list has a lot of shows I could've done without watching, but I'm not sure my tv/movie/game lists are all that different.

The Tribe - 6/10

This movie did a great job of telling me something I already knew; dialogue in a movie is critical for me. Even though I *think* I followed the story, it was impossible for it to ever suck me in in any kind of meaningful way. Didn't really feel any particular way about any of the characters. I've also learned that, lacking voices, I get people confused very easily. Half of the male characters could've changed actors during the movie and I don't think I would've even noticed.

Movie does a good job of having nudity that's not really sexual. Feels like half of the movie someone is either naked, taking their clothes off or getting dressed, and not a damn bit of it was something I could describe as hot. That seems like it's something hard for movies to accomplish, as even when a nude scene isn't supposed to be sexual at all it's always shot in a way that makes it so. Random woman scared when masked killer breaks into her house to kill her, catching her in the middle of changing because it's a horror movie so of course? You best make sure that they spent an abundance of time making sure her boobs looked 10/10.

Honestly, the biggest let down in this movie where no voices exist is that the sound doesn't stand out to me. Definitely don't want things to sound like old Wham Bam Batman sound effects have come to life, but even something like footsteps are just so muted here.

the consequence of being set on your movie having no subtitles is that the plot has to still be relatively straightforward if you don't want to completely alienate everyone who is not well-versed in your language. i actually just don't think the plot is that substantive and i'll agree with your point that many of the characters come off as interchangeable.

interesting point about the nudity. iirc it did come off a bit 'harsh'

the film to me is more about the experience than anything else.

I've started and not finished quite a few shows, but rather than listing them as on hold or dropped I just remove them from my list entirely. Just prefer having an overall simpler list so I don't use those categories.

I'd like to watch the Ghibli movies in release order, though that's not a hard line stance by any means since I already watched Marnie first for this topic. Also helps that the ones I'm most interested in watching all seem to come from the earlier years anyway.

I think I said earlier this year I needed to watch The Expanse so I was caught up when the new season eventually comes out. That plan was a failure. I don't know what it is with The Expanse, it's pretty much everything I want in a sci-fi show and I've loved every season of it, but my inability to just... start watching it, is tenfold what it is for pretty much anything else.

As far as movies go, I think the only one I've watched recently is Green Knight, which I liked quite a bit. Still need to get around to watching Dune.
