I actually watched this last week!

Nobody (2021) - 7/10
It seemed like a parody of sorts to John Wick, and it did that pretty well. The guy hoping to get back in the action again was nice to see over the constant guy gets forced in again. The main reason it's getting a 3 is because the movie was kind of slow, especially in the beginning. The action pieces were fairly over the top, but happened quite infrequently. But also the stakes were just low. How he got back into action was such an overblown response and I just found a hard time going with it because of that. Overall though wasn't bad.

In addition to catching up on my backlog of movies in here, I watched about a dozen other movies over the last week. I hit a Yakuza 0 wall of fatigue and replaced it with movies for the time being.

TV backlog is still sitting in the corner wondering why I don't love it any longer.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

I'd meant to watch this one for years after hearing nothing but acclaim for it. It's definitely in the weird category of films that I can respect much more than I can enjoy, having an undeniably slow pace and dry demeanor. It reminds me a little of The Love Witch in the way its sleepy tone pairs with its absolute brutality. I'm always down for experimentation with horror tropes and the viewers perception of a movie monster, and the way the film flips its own title (which immediately brings in notions of a woman in danger) is pretty brilliant.

I don't know that I would watch it again. I don't know that I even really enjoyed watching it this time? It's films like these that are the hardest to rate fairly, because it is objectively well-shot, well-acted, well-scripted and an excellent concept.

Think I'll go 8/10, but maybe a low 8

Hadn't seen this one before, but it was nice to be reminded that Tim Burton can actually make good movies when he isn't being way too Tim Burton-y.

I had this same exact thought while watching lol

I just kind of hit the 'Don't want to play this every day' wall for the moment.

Cabaret clubs were the main culprit. I completely finished the real estate business the second the game allowed me to, and in the process also finished, I believe, every single part of the completion list for Kiryu available at the moment. But the cabaret clubs not being mostly hands off like real estate doesn't allow me to go around and finish other sidequests at the same time, which is a bit of a downer. Doesn't help that after leaving Kiryu and his 70,000,000,000 or whatever I had, Majima started off close to broke.

I'll still finish it. I didn't complete that terrible catfight mini-game for nothing. Just need a break.

Big Fish

here comes yet another Forrest Gump comparison. although Bloom comes off a little less charming and more of an idiot. i really could not get over the "working for literally a sentence about a girl you don't know anything about" no matter how romantic or fantastical it was supposed to be. some things are just too offensive to look over i guess. some really fun stuff here though, especially early on that again reminded me "wow Tim Burton can make a good movie." Considering I associate him with directing my least favorite movie of all time more than anything else these days, it was a pleasant reminder. The baby just popping out and sliding across the floor like the force it came out with just rendered any umbilical cord nonexistent got a pretty big unexpected laugh from me.

i don't know why but the actor for the older version of the son seemed so out of place that it was almost uncanny like he was not a real person. pretty distracting though not through any fault of the movie's. overall enjoyable. 6/10

Barry Lyndon

I recently finished listening to the audiobook version of Pride and Prejudice on my commute so I was kind of in the right mood for a period piece. And for the most part it was pretty entertaining. I think my favorite parts were all the hoity toity speeches the stepson gave about what how much he fucking hated Barry.

Maybe I went in with the wrong mindset because I was actually expecting an epic where I come away with a newfound favorite character I really spent a lot of time with like Les Mis or The Count of Monte Cristo but there are a couple factors that prevent it from reaching that level for me.

The first issue I have is with the narrator. Its kind of strange that despite the three hour runtime, I never really FELT the growth or a type of attachment to the character in a similar way when I read a book. Theres a distance in the film that is maintained between the audience and its subject and the narration lends itself to that because the events that we see arent really experienced along with the character but rather conveyed by a third party and that creates the emotional distance and subsequent lack of attachment to characters. Of course, it should be stated that the main character is an asshole and not really a hero so maybe that is exactly what it was going for. Although in that case maybe I would have preferred to see more explicit stuff about what a piece of shit he was and all the underhanded shit he would resort to. So yeah, perhaps a wrongful expectation on my part that contributed to my overall enjoyment. Also, I did view this over multiple sittings so that probably had an effect as well.

I actually thought the first part was more interesting because we see the origins of the character and it introduces all this crazy shit and theres a lot of funny stuff. Like, the emphasis from Barrys cousin that No, we are NOT fucking because he is my COUSIN (paraphrased) and how theres all this talk about how the cousin is going to be set for life once she marries the general and then Barry just throws a fucking glass in his face and then just shoots him.

Random sidenote that in one of the first scenes, theres a long(?) shot of the cousins cleavage and my first thought was is that historically accurate? I kind of assumed that the clothing for women would be more conservative to the point where cleavage was almost nonexistent even in private settings. Also waaay later on theres another scene that opens with a shot of cleavage for like 10 seconds and then the camera pulls back and its actually Mrs. Barry lol.

Other sidenotes: I hated the kid. Maybe I would have enjoyed Barrys downfall more if I felt more of his journey as mentioned above. Hilarious scene where Lady Lyndon asks Barry not to smoke and he just blows it in her face.

Probably would benefit from a rewatch but not sure if that would ever happen. 7/10

Barry fuckin' Lyndon

It was...pretty good. Production quality is high as expected, apparently Kubrick used magic NASA lenses or some crazy shit to shoot the entire countryside in perfect focus. He really liked the zoom-out maneuver on this movie, didn't he? I think that contributes to the impersonal distance of it, there is a psychological effect that goes with constantly moving away from the characters. The omniscient and somewhat sarcastic narrator puts even more space between the audience and protagonist, as we're frequently told what's going to happen beforehand. I ended up feeling like it was more about social commentary than characters - the absurd pageantry of navigating the class divide, contradictions of formal beauty and ugly content. My favorite scene was Barry smuggling himself out of Prussia using makeup to disguise himself as the deposed Chevalier. It's all about the presentation. Not my favorite Kubrick right away but it's in the top half 7/10

Because after getting completely caught up I decide to immediately fall three movies behind again.

Nobody - 8/10

Really liked the movie, though I do have a few gripes with it. First, Bob... who will be called Bob during this because it's either that or Saul as I don't actually remember what his name was in this movie, is presented as a badass, secret government type pretty early on, someone who knows how to do just about everything and is completely cool and collected under pressure, but absolutely loses it on some randos on a bus. Sure, a regular guy getting emotional and going rambo makes sense, but with everything we know about this character from the movie not so much. It's not even like he tried escorting the girl off the bus, they got in his way and then, well, gotta do what you gotta do. My man starts everything.

On the other hand, the bus fight was my favorite part of the film. Came off very much like a fight from a Jackie Chan film, where even though Jackie (Bob) is the winner of the fight, he takes his lumps during it. Makes an unrealistic fight seem somewhat more realistic when the hero gets his ass kicked too. Also, the Stop Requested sign going off for some humor is also straight out of a Jackie Chan fight scene. Which is why the rest of the action scenes didn't hold up as well for me, as ol' Bob immediately transitions into the nearly perfect hero who can do no wrong. The five randos on the bus gave him more trouble than a gross of russians with an equal amount of firepower.

Second fight, the goons are told to bring him in alive so of course they're armed to the teeth and firing to kill. Not sure how they planned to take him alive when they were going over their plans before the attack but that seemed like a poor way to go about it.

Also, I know Bob ain't exactly a spring chicken so anyone playing his dad has to be even older, but Christopher Lloyd seems really out of place here.
