Despite the fact that you collect a Power Moon every 30 seconds, it still felt empty. Like it was just a big demo for an unfinished game. Nothing in particular stands out about the game, and nearly four years after launch I still don't have much desire to replay it.

Yeah getting a star in Mario 64 or a shine in Sunshine actually felt like you accomplished something, in Odyssey it's like "hey you walked ten steps, here's a moon."

I liked the 2D sections and I appreciated that there were a LOT of little mini activities to do (the RC car race, becoming different creatures, that section where you take control of a tank, etc), but they weren't interesting enough to hold my interest longer than a minute or two before I moved on.

It's really hard for me to put my finger on why I didn't really like Odyssey. I've replayed every other 3D Mario (not counting 3D Land or World), but Odyssey doesn't do it for me.

I played it again recently, it's still really good. There are undoubtedly a lot of filler moons which is a weakness but the game gives you a lot of wiggle room to basically experience all there is to offer even if you don't 100% it. I try not to put too much value on individual moons either since obviously some are way simpler than others (though at least they had some multi-moons for big objectives), instead I just look at it like is there fun platforming and other stuff to do, which there's a lot of.

Nothing else really comes close to meeting the varying design paradigms of other 3D Mario games in the middle which is cool to me too. Maybe 3DL/W have something to them that I didn't appreciate and I should try them again, but I also played all the games on 3DAS recently so I can at least say Odyssey easily eclipses those for me

I dunno I think I've routinely beaten Mario 64 in like eight hours unless I'm greatly underestimating, but I know it isn't long, and I'm not a wiz at it by any means. Eight hours is 4 minutes per star, 10 hours is 5, 12 is 6, etc. And that's including time spent going between the levels and the boss fights, so it's really even less to get a star. I think it's greatly inflated by 100 coin stars also, just doing the proper objectives really isn't much.

Doing the initial path through a level in Odyssey can take like a half hour to an hour, you might get little stars along the way, but 64 doesn't really have anything equivalent to that. Once you do one or two stars in Mario 64 in five minutes total you basically know the whole level

What's lame? The criticism or the whole "getting the Power Moons every 30 seconds"?

It makes it feel less rewarding when Power Moons are everywhere. It's a valid complaint. Odyssey feels like a collectathon, the other games never did.

Ehhhhh

That really depends on the level. The early levels are bad for that, I agree. SM64 has a lot of flaws but given it was the first of its kind, I give it a lot of credit.

with one exception being the Metroid Prime games, isn't this more or less status quo for Nintendo for the last 10+ years? none of their games feel worth playing. they're just running on nostalgia fumes. (they're obsessed with hardware innovation rather than software/game innovation.)

I can agree there might be too many moons (and I even got 999 which the last 120 or so require grinding out coins to buy em or something).

But the game is still a lot of fun and I don't think it's overrated. Especially if you learn the nuances of the jump mechanics to jump higher/farther than normal.

Been meaning to replay it but new games just keep stacking up.

Breath of the Wild though I could only stomach to play for a measly ten hours.
It felt so boring to play and there was so much empty space with nothing going on in them.

But then again, I've always been more of a Mario guy than a Zelda guy.

I bought a switch at launch with Mario Odyeyse (well soon after launch). I finished it in a weekend (not all the after game stuff, just the main game and a bit of the after game.

I already had BoTW for my Wii U, so that was the only game I really wanted to play at the time. I finished faster then any of the previous mario games. All the boss fights were absolute cake, there was almost no challenge in the game at all (the Wii U mario game was much harder).

I ended up returning the switch and selling the game (due to best buys 20% off thing I had I got all my money back).

Still have not re-gotten a Switch to this day, just not enough games I want to play on it.

But yeah, in my opinion its the worst of the lot, Mario 64 kicked ass and is STILL fun to play to this day. Both Mario Galaxy's rocked, and The Cat one for the Wii, I have replayed multiple times. Heck even the Super Mario Sunshine game was more fun to me than Odyssey.

I have to disagree. I loved every second of it. Its my favorite game, and its the game that got me back into playing video games. I loved the art, the characters, the music, the atmosphere, the fluid controls everything. I have a hard time imagining Im ever going to love a game more than Odyssey

Pretty much exactly this. The game mostly boils down to "play around with these awesome platforming controls and interesting environments, and you'll find some random stuff periodically as you accomplish things." More so than almost any other game I've played, it was just a joy to play, such that getting to play it was all the sense of reward I needed. Some of the purple coin hunting was a bit lame (I broke out a guide to find a few of them, made worse by the fact that they gated that help behind an amiibo), and I was disappointed by the coin grind needed at the very end to truly 100% it by getting all the costumes (it wasn't a bad grind, as grinds go, but it was just so much weaker than the rest of the game that it seemed worse than it was), but I can't think of any other game that has just made me feel so consistently happy from start to finish.

I disagree with this, what more could they add? At least you had outfits in this. In the other ones you had more collectibles but they basically just got you more stars (coins, blue coins, red coins, purple coins...). To me the "easy" moons are kind of like the blue coins in sunshine but they just cut out the middleman

The only reason it isn't that quick in 64 and Sunshine is because you get booted back to the hub when you collect one. You have to replay sections of those levels over and over to get all the stars/shines. It flows a lot better in Odyssey.
