Three eggs, the thief took all 4 of yours and gave you 3 back. The rooster laid 5 eggs but you don't have em.

So you have the three eggs the thief gave you, at least until the thief takes em back.

If they wrote it better, maybe the internet wouldnt be split. I mean, they are saying their rooster laid 5 eggs. So, useless theres something new going on in this world, they may be young or stupid which then makes me doubt their counting abilities. And did the thief give you three of your eggs that they stole from you? Or three eggs they stole
From someone else? Or three eggs from somewhere else that he may not have stolen

My take on it.

The post says you HAD four eggs, which to me means you don't have them anymore. Then it says a thief gave you three (probably three of your 4 eggs you originally had). The last part is irrelevant since A: Roosters don't lay eggs and B: Even if it was a magic Rooster, it laying eggs doesn't mean you have them.

Therefore, logically at least, you had 4 eggs, but someone stole them, then you were given 3 eggs, and somewhere a magic rooster laid 5 more eggs. How many eggs do you have?

Three.

It's a stupid riddle anyway since there are obvious mistakes in it. If the riddle SAYS a rooster laid eggs, then you have to count that as actually happening since...it's part of the question. Maybe it's in an alternate reality where roosters lay eggs and Hens chase em around all the time.

At no point am I ever told that I lost eggs, so obviously the answer has to be 12<img src="//:0">. Never mind the fact that roosters dont lay eggs, but if it did, the fact that its my rooster makes its eggs mine. 4+3+5=12. Any other answer has to be wrong because logic.

Uh... if that is the "supposed" answer then this isn't a riddle with an answer. "Roosters can't lay eggs" isn't applicable since it doesn't change the part where it says you get five more.

The riddle never says that the thief gave you eggs, or that the rooster laid eggs. It just says the number leaving you to assume it means that many eggs.

Untrue. You have between 3 to 12 eggs depending on how far you want to bend the riddle.

You can start off with any number of 0-4 eggs. You could have had 4 eggs but now you have more by the end of the riddle or have less due to the thief stealing any amount of eggs from you.

The thief gives you 3 so now you have 3-7 eggs depending on how many they stole from you at the start.

Now maybe you didn't realize that your rooster was never a rooster to begin with. Easy enough mistake to make if you don't know the gender differences between chicken and roosters. Sure it's common knowledge amongst most people but there are people who don't know this. Now you have either 5 more eggs or 0 more eggs because you know have confirmed that it is a rooster.

Now you can combine any combination of these numbers to get from 3 to 12 eggs. Therefore there is a solution but not an exact number because of the nature of riddles and how much can be left to interpretation.

I would hope that the contest flies meant eggs. While its possible they didnt mean eggs, then its not a riddle anymore, but an incomplete sentence But if it didnt mean eggs, then that changes things for the the answer trodi_911 gave. Meaning it could be anything from 0-12. That said, the question is dumb. And for all we know, the wording could make it mean like anything

I can get zero-

I "had" 4 , past tense so I no longer "have" them

The thief's 3 , a specific designation implying stolen property , can be assumed to be legally someone else's ; so I legally can't "have" them either. There's no indication the thief stole them from me and he can't give me what's already mine.

A rooster can fertilize eggs , but not lay them .

The hypothetical is written in the past tense, it could be read as, as the start of the hypothetical, the amount of eggs owned was/is 4.

Which shows the problem with the "riddle". Answers have been incorporating calculations, but also "logic", grammar and biology. A riddle like this should be solvable with the information given.

Badly worded riddle. Obviously roosters don't lay eggs but it says you "Had" 3 eggs, not "Have". There's not enough information to conclude whether or not you still have those or just had them at one point.

So answer: Not enough information provided.

First, while it doesn't specify that the thief gave you 3 eggs, if nothing is specified the object in question reverts to the last object mentioned, in this case eggs.

Since it only makes sense that you would use "had" to describe things you no longer have, the initial 4 eggs are gone (probably taken by the thief since he has been identified as one). That thief then gave you 3 of your 4 eggs back.

Finally in no way does the rooster laying eggs (Even though it's yours) make those eggs something you have. Even if it's a magical rooster, it doesn't mean you have the eggs it laid.

Therefore, you start with 0 eggs, get 3 from the thief, and none from the Magical/Trans Rooster, ending up with a total of 3 eggs, one gender fluid fowl, and the knowledge that a thief is nearby who may steal anything you actually still have.

not true. at most it indicates that the situation has changed since then, but it isn't even strictly that. "in 2002 I had a car". all it really indicates is the past. "I had one, I obtained another, so now I have two".

or by your/the riddle's supposed logic "I had one, I found one, now I have one". no one says things like that. that's not how english works.

jokes on all of you as only 9 people got it right when the answer is 3!!.

Most people figured out by the english that the wording of had means it is a fantasy number and roosters obviously dont lay eggs so the answer is obviously 3 because a kind thief gave him 3 eggs so that is the true and only answer according to the riddle creator
