"E-cigarette company Juul Labs will pay $40 million and make changes to its business practices to settle the first state lawsuit that alleged it marketed to teens, North Carolina state attorneys announced on Monday.

The settlement follows a lawsuit filed in 2019 by North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein that claimed Juul marketed its products to children and misled the public about risks associated with those products. The order issued Monday will restrict the e-cigarette manufacturer's sales and advertising in the state, and provide funds to help those addicted to e-cigarettes.

"Under this consent order, Juul cannot sell mint. It cannot sell mango, it cannot sell crme brulee, or any other flavor," without authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration, Stein said in a news briefing after a court hearing on Monday.

"Juul must abandon all marketing strategies and content that appeals to young people. Juul will be prohibited from influencer advertising, outdoor advertising near schools, sponsoring sporting events and concerts, and most importantly, most social media advertising," he said. "JUUL cannot use anyone under the age of 35 years in their advertising. Juul cannot make any claims that its e-cigarettes are safer or better for your health than combustible cigarettes."

The consent order also requires that Juul institute a barcode age-verification system of IDs at places where its products are sold, and that this system be tested through a retailer compliance program using mystery shoppers at 1,000 stores per year. For online sales, the company is ordered to restrict sales to individuals to no more than two devices per month, 10 devices per year and no more than 60 pods per month.

The settlement money will go toward youth affected by e-cigarettes, and will be paid over six years."

I was a pack a day smoker and then switched to vaping. When smoking I couldn't take deep breaths without going into a coughing fit, I had to take a bunch of shallow breaths. I hacked up loogies, my chest always felt tight, and I smelled like an ashtray. Haven't had an actual cigarette in a couple years now, and all those symptoms are gone and I physically feel way way better.

I don't know what the long term effects of vaping will be, there's still nicotine so high blood pressure/heart problems will most certainly still be an issue, but I can't imagine it can approach how destructive cigarettes are with all those extra chemicals. So yes, I will say I'm convinced vaping is safer than cigarettes.

Now it is better to not vape than to vape, nicotine addiction is real. But if we're doing a comparison of the two, I don't see how anyone can say cigarettes are not more dangerous.

the real issue with juul isn't that its product is bad, because its a much better and safer product then regular cigarettes. its that they started marketing it like candy. essentially they followed the same model cigarettes did decades ago.

now i think its stupid that they're banning flavored juul with this, especially since we've got an alcohol market flooded with different flavored drinks; it seems like a stupid knee-jerk overreach but it happened because juul tried to pass their product off as candy.

Thing is, adults like the flavors too, I quit Juuls when they got rid of the mango flavor and got a smok RPM. I use green apple for mine most of the time. I tried Juul's tobacco flavor one time and they taste like ass and when that became all they could sell I was out. Looking at how much they had to lower the price after that suggests others moved on too, either back to cigs because why settle for a crappy imitation, or to other devices, I'll be surprised if Juul lasts as a brand much longer.
