Where most every game of this genre has great maps that list most things automatically this one makes you buy a ton of shit to make it function worse than them. Even for seeing yourself on the map........

Yeah, that was one thing I really didn't like about the game - having to buy basic map features. Like, let's save the upgrades for actual in-game abilities, not basic UI features.

Honestly though, don't let that put you off - it's overall a great game, just with a few flaws.

And you lose your money when you die and bringing up the shitty map doesnt stop gameplay.

Im listing literal basic features in similar games like this that this goes without. Like extremely basic.....

Aside from that gameplay/story segregation is a thing for a reason; I was thinking more about things like the "you are here" indicator, custom markers, etc - and for that matter, having to specifically buy a "base" map for each area before you can fill in the rest (which in turn requires a visit to a save point) seems a bit awkward too, compared to "if you've been there, you can see it on your map" like most other games do.

The impact of damage is really weird: the sound cuts out for a second, a quick freeze and then recoil.

Its just odd and disorientating at first.

Yeah i had run around and killed 2 relatively easy bosses so i had a bunch of money but died just being careless not knowing id drop all of my money.

I just restarted and got back and made sure to go spend money as i need to.

Its still weird spending all this money for basic map functions of any metroid/vania. Just seems like busy work/pointless annoyance.

I think Hollow Knight illustrated to me that games don't necessarily need to do that though. It's just something we've grown so accustomed to in Metroidvanias. But obviously they chose to be different for thematic purposes. They wanted to add a bit more depth to the map salesman than just "buy map to fill out area". I think the map is laid out well enough that it never gets too convoluted.

Its like 2 steps back from any metroid/vania game. Its an odd choice. Its weird for a game to be hyped so hard only to find a basic function such as the map has been made annoying.

And its not fun to have this be this way nor does it provide challenge. Its simply an annoyance you adjust to.

I started playing it but stopped at some point. Maybe metroidvanias arent for me. I dont like backtracking to find a path I forgot about cause I didnt have the right skill at the time. I dont even really like exploration, I mean its alright in some cases like BotW but I dont think metroidvanias do it for me

i think the I killed the mantis lords most recently and thats where I stopped

I was able to play shantae and the pirates curse though cause it was cute and charming

Its hard to get into at first. The map isnt welcoming and i dont have much motivation to give a shit about the story or "powering" up my character.

Vs a typical metroidvania where i want to level up and find weapons and the map is convenient.

HK has no brightness setting and is generally dark without many colors. I havnt really noticed the music either.

I like it in context. Checking your map means your dude is literally holding it up and looking at it, so you can't do it while jumping or swimming and it doesn't stop time. Updating your map requires you to find a bench because your dude needs to draw it. Placing markers requires you to have markers to place. It's just subtle little immersion things, I get why you wouldn't like them but to me it adds to the charm of the game.

Things that are literally automatically done in every other game in the genre can be annoying.

But yeah im really feeling the literal nameless main characters annoyance like im actually in the game myself!

These are all factual things about the game. Honestly the game as an aesthetic is meant to feel quiet, muted, and lonely. I can totally understand people not liking that.

For me, that made it a lot easier to get immersed.
