Alright, we will still be here when the new variants shed the spike protein and we have to go back into lockdown again. Israel is already reintroducing mask mandates and social distancing.

Maybe when we have developed the new inoculations for the even deadlier strains we are currently incubating by dropping restrictions, we will have learned our lesson and wait until everyone in the world gets their shot before we drop restrictions.

And maybe pigs will fly.

Really looking forward to doing this over and over again, for the next decade of so...

And prior to that, it was the unvaccinated that griped about and didn't want to wear the masks.
Literally a 12 year old could've predicted how that CDC announcement would pan out, and yet the CDC was caught in a shocked Pikachu pose.

They fucked up, royally. They should've known better after a YEAR of these scum bags proving so eager to ditch the masks. The second they said you can ditch the masks if vaccinated w/o requiring businesses to card check people, they were saying "free for all!" The honor system will never work, and these cretins have no honor.

That announcement was the CDC stabbing every responsible person in the back, and I will never forgive them for it.

The RIVM situation is kinda the same here.

RIVM: No more masks if...
Most Dutch People: no masks or distancing, let's party!
RIVM continues: a 1.5m distance can be safely maintained.
Most Dutch People: cannot hear you, too busy living "normally".

Like I said at the time, it was equivalent to when engineers who've gotten so used to living on the bleeding edge of technology and who have no grasp of how actual human beings think and act introduce a new feature, and then act surprised when people are annoyed by it. "What do you mean you don't want this thing that only appeals to .1% of the population? Everyone I know is part of that .1%! This is clearly the best thing ever and you're objectively wrong if you don't want it!"

The CDC may have accurately reported the medical science, but they blatantly ignored the psychological/sociological side of the issue, and in that moment did far more harm than good. Which is sort of the opposite of the entire purpose of their existence in the first place.

To be fair, I strongly suspect that one of the main reasons they made the announcement was to give people an incentive to be vaccinated. The sentiment of "why should I bother getting vaccinated if I'm still going to have to wear a mask?" has been a very common reason for vaccine hesitancy, and while I'm sure many of the people saying that are staunch anti-vaxxers that will just move on to the next excuse for not getting the shot now that that's gone, it could reasonably have been expected to get a decent number of people off the fence.

Of course, that ignores the fact that businesses were only ever going to treat this as an excuse to abolish mask mandates, given that the only reason most of them hadn't already is because it was illegal to. However many people were encouraged to get vaccinated by the announcement, it was inevitable that it would result in unvaccinated people doing away with masks (which actually eliminates its ability to encourage people to get the shot), and failing to take that into account was hopelessly naive.

Which loops right back around to the "they blatantly ignored the psychological/sociological side of the issue" and "being hopelessly out of touch" premises. So again, still culpable.

What, that people don't want to get vaccinated because they're thinking in terms of immediate personal benefit and being salty that public policy doesn't reflect that? That's pretty obvious. Anyone that's paying any attention should be aware of that, even Shapiro.

49.56% overall, 68.4% in the age group that's doing best (which is not the entire adult population). Not exactly 80%.

If you're fully vaccinated, you don't have to. Nobody's disputing the CDC's assessment on the matter. The issue is not the science, the issue is idiots using the science the justify conclusions that the science does not in any way support.

California hasn't even hit 50% for fully vaccinated.

While I could be wrong, I don't think 35% of the population of California are children.

To be fair, it does hit 50% if you round to the nearest whole number. That rounding represents a difference of nearly 140,000 people, so whether or not it's reasonable is a matter of personal opinion, but it's still pretty close to 50.

That works fine until they help breed a new mutation strain that bypasses your resistance.

And when you're still paying into a health care system that they're using, monopolizing resources and putting health care workers at risk.

It's also worth remembering that vaccinated doesn't mean immune. You can still catch things from those people. And you're not going to be able to completely avoid them as long as you live in the same world they do.

People love to say shit like "It's my body so it's my choice", but it really isn't. We've implicitly accepted for decades that the health needs of society trump the stupid opinions of individuals (I couldn't go to elementary school years ago without MMR and TB vaccinations). When you're dealing with something that can shut the entire world down for a year, it's not really a "Oh, let them make bad decisions and live with the consequences" sort of scenario.

The flip side of that is, the numbers are 49.etc% for people with two doses, but two doses isn't necessarily fully vaccinated. You're still technically supposed to wait 2 weeks after the second shot before you're considered fully vaccinated.

So I'd argue the real number is probably even lower than 49%. I definitely wouldn't round up in that instance.

True. The current "fully vaccinated" stat is whatever the "two shot" stat was two weeks ago, which in this case is 46.61%. That only hits 50 if you round to the nearest 10, and that would be silly.
