If you were him would you take the near million dollars to sell this house to the big time developers?

Orlando Capote is REFUSING to sell his small Coral Gables home that is currently wedged between 2 GIANT buildings that is in the middle of construction zone for the largest commercial development in Coral Gables history.

His small family home was the only holdout from the developers who paid out the rest of the homes that are already bulldozed over as his home is now swallowed up by the 600 million commercial development despite countless offers to buy him out of up to 900,000 smackers!!

It's a real life Pixar movie situation as in the film "Up" where the main character stands pat when the city around him explodes into skyscrapers

He declined 60 offers in the last 6 years from developers, real estate agents, or house flippers to purchase the 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 1300 square foot home.

But even almost a million wasn't enough for him to budge because the house is priceless to him

His father bought the home in 1989 after immigrating from Cuba and worked double to buy the home as he said it holds extra sentimental value to him since his death in 2005

He said "This house is like a hard drive. As i look around n dlive in it and move through it, i relive a lot of memories. That i could not find in another house"

He wanted to honour his mother and father's wishes who were insistent that he not sell their "family treasure"

Capote tells CBS "The house is my soul. So what good is it to sell your soul for all the money in the world"

He accused the city of multiple violations and says his home is being swallowed up by the mega development as some of the debris is already falling down on his property

They denied the accusations but despite this he is not moving and says his parents memories keep him company and doesn't feel alone in this house

If you were him would you sell the house?

What a fucking idiot. You can still have those precious memories living somewhere else.

Or maybe, he's not an idiot and he's still holding out for better offers.

Or, OR, he's ABSOLUTELY, 100%, Stuffed crust, for real an idiot, where he dies, the banks take over, destroy that property, and he's inheritors are left with jack shit.

They'll try to kill or bankrupt him. He's standing in the way of millions of dollars. Probably poisoning his water as we speak.

Also, I bet this house has a mold problem. When buildings are this close and the sun never hits them, they always develop mold on the side of the house.

I mean, good for him for standing his ground I guess, but houses have zero emotional value for me so I just cant relate I guess.

Id use the whole deal as a negotiation opportunity. Surely if these corporations were offering $1M, theyd be willing to go up to $1.5-$2 right? Whats another mil to them?

He lived his whole life in that house, and he said he feels his parents presence in the home. And they apparently made him vow to never let the house go. I dont see why this is so hard to grasp for some of you. Some people value certain things more than money. He apparently is content with his choice. Leave him be

Probably. But the flip side is that there's probably no actual way to make money on his land. It'll just end up being a courtyard for the other buildings. So it's more a clean up project for the building owners. That may limit their offers.

Under normal circumstances, it would be foolish to hold onto a modest house in the face of a million dollar offer.

But this situation makes it almost amoral to part with it. I applaud his decision.

There's a definite symbolic value to this situation. The house represents an upward mobility of living from Cuba to America and a house toiled for working double shifts. Meanwhile, the evil corporation wishes to demolish it.

Can he not just sell the land, and use the money to have the house moved somewhere else and everyone wins?

I feel like they could offer him some kind of deal, like a million bucks AND pay to have the entire house relocated to somewhere else.

That or they are just gonna find a way to get rid of him by either trying to dig up some dirt, somehow crank up the value of the home so much that the taxes change to a redonk amount, or just have him whacked.

Ehh. 900k isn't really a ton in terms of house buying. Sure, he could get a better house with that amount, but he wouldn't have a ton of money left over so it's not like 900k is gonna let his kids be set for life or something.

Well that's just sad reality, but do so as long it doesn't threaten your way of life, I say.

Besides, if you actually own the land what litigation can be brought?

Truth be told, I feel like this is is one of those things where a company does something deliberately unlawful and then eats the consequences because the cost ends up being less to them than what they can profit from in the aftermath. So if that dude ever goes on vacation he's probably going to come back to a bulldozed home.

Stop letting corporations ruin shit. They shouldn't have been allowed to get a permit to build on this unless every single owner had already agreed to sell.

Stability is a good thing. We should not further normalize homes being a commodity that is easily displaced by government and corporations.

My dad has 40 acres with rare magnolia trees on it that he almost killed himself over working to pay off. He outbid a notorious developer known for trailer parks. Paid 100 grand for it and just recently one acre of land in the area sold for 120 grand. He gets a lot of letters from developers and real estate people. My brother and I are firm in deciding to not sell if the land gets passed down to us.
I get the sentimental part of it. Its something somebody worked real hard for so that you could have something better down the road. It was my grandpas dream to get a hold of that land and it is nice to walk through every now and then and just listen to the nature. Its all forest.

Six million sounds pretty fair though.

Besides it's smart. If he changes his mind he can probably get the price even higher.

Imagine if he budged right away how much money would be left at the table. I doubt it started at even half the latest offer.

Honestly dude should sell when he knows he is near death and leave the money to some family.

He lived his life there and then he drained as much as possible from these assholes for his family.
