Buildings all fall mostly down, and break apart at similar structural weak-points, regardless of how the falling started.

I worked on the construction site for the new building to the south. We just finished it like a year ago.

A few years ago during construction the condo owners association for Champlain Tower was sueing or trying to sue the construction company for the ground rumbling of the heavy machinery causing their pool to crack.

Residents were also complaining about cracks in the columns in the garage under the building 3~ years ago.

Whatever came of those lawsuits back then is going to be to blame.

This is horrifying.

That video of the collapse is genuinely terrifying. Im glad theres survivors but how can anyone survive that if they werent in the side of the building that didnt collapse?

Just pure luck about where you land and what lands above you. About 20 people survived being in the towers on 9/11 and were found buried in the ruble.

Could have landed on your neighbors mattress and then a tall chunk of building lands next to you, propping up a different chunk of building that would have otherwise killed you

I don't think it's done collapsing.

With this one:


That large vertical crack up the left side of the top image, is absent in the lower one.

The original contractors/engineers from 1981 may not be to blame. It could been caused by issues that arose after the building was finished such underground flooding from sea levels rising, and/or issues from nearby construction a few years ago damaging the building.

Depends. The investigators still have the other half of the building to see how it was constructed and who signed off on what.

Is the other half of the building even safe to be in? Isnt it also liable to collapse any time?

There is a story in Florida a few years ago where it was basically the same thing a guy was sleeping in his house in a sinkhole opened just underneath his bedroom and literally swallowed him while he slept

There's been reports of a child, and a mother and child. May be the same child.

The rubble looks kind of flat, was it a sinkhole that the building fell into?

The complex had a plaza with parking space underneath. The depression is probably the parking space that's now filled with rubble.

It's plausible that some drunk bastard took out a column and essentially unzipped half the building.

People are speculating that the rising sea level might have affected the building's foundation. After all, the land is practically a sponge that absorbs all that ocean water.

40-year-old building, continuously sinking since the 90s, water damage from leaks, heavy construction next door, new roof being put on, shifty coastal ground, etc.
It's not going to be one thing that brought this building down, but several.

Oh man, that's what happened in the Hyatt Regency Walkway Collapse in KC back in the 80's. Nobody drowned but some of those pinned down were close to it.

Edit: Actually not rain, it was a burst pipe from the sprinkler system.

What exactly are we supposed to do though?

Its dark to say this but most of those people are probably flattened under the ruins They said one of the people was so disfigured that they couldnt be identified from their face.
