just started berserk for the first time last night and watched the first three episodes. But this is a relatively old series right? I'm watching the 2016 series I think, which has some CGI in it. Is it the same as the 1997 series?
Oh you poor poor soul. One of the worst anime I've ever seen. Not even the fact it was Berserk could save it

I gotta recommend Fullmetal Alchemist : Brotherhood. A lot of people swear by the 2003 version, theres some weird changes they make in the story but it does deliver feels if thats what youre looking for, but Brotherhood does that as well as telling the authors story where the 2003 version ending up deviating from the manga.
I personally recommend anyone watching both. first one deviates from the manga (it released before the manga was finished) and isn't as epic and cannon as brotherhood in the second half, it it's good. it's more dark too.

If you want similar sort of epic, maybe Vinland Saga?

Berserk is kinda one of a kind in some ways
tried watching vinland saga on amazon prime, but got bored to tears and couldn't finish the first episode. maybe I'll try again after. ugh

No, it's not the same. The show from '97 is the one you're looking for. It's old so I'm not sure if it's available on apps like Netflix, but the entire thing is on YouTube in pretty good quality.

Hmm, I watched that when I was way young on adult swim? I forget but it was after hours. I kept up with that and The Big-O (.Hack//) and didnt understand these were anime lol I just thought they were like cooler expanded shows

but Full Metal Alchemist I watched up a couple of episodes past the dog thing >_>

that was freaky - like real freaky for me as a kid haha but I was so freaked out that it was actually on TV made public for everyone

I cant remember much so thats actually not a bad idea

To me it's like, let's put a scene of things to come in the first episode to grab the interest of our viewers. But then we turn that scene into a whole episode, and also use that exact same episode later in the series where it's more appropriate.

Hmm you know,

just because its my first time Ill watch it and get a good WTF out of it lol

Claymore definitely fits the dark fantasy theme pretty well, but it's another "you have to read twenty more volumes of manga to get the true ending of the story" series due to a filler ending.
Gungrave is pretty good. Definitely skip episode 1 as recommended.

Hmm.. Right now Im just spoiling the fuck out of Berserk through random YT vids and its getting me hype to see the movies now

i saw clips of the super CGI Berserk and it looks really weird, kinda like a music video if Im being honest >_>

also crazy that the manga author died last month. RIP

Word I guess the 2016 is like the updated compendium, I usually like to start with the rougher looking start (whether thats a game or movie or show) just because after you get spoiled by nice things it tends to be hard to go back >_>

but sometimes theres a charm to the whole thing - Im really pulled to the characters and its fantastic to see things come together with more weight later on

youre in for a real treat

maybe watch both? I shouldve done that - I did it with Evangelion lol

It's the first time I'm geeking out at the idea of getting the manga for once lol

it's the ending that has you craving for more tbh but the journey there absolutely needs what happens before it is all I'll say

Berserk is my all time favorite manga. I binged it all in about a week, and was left empty inside when I had to wait for a new chapter. Well, now I feel empty after the loss of Miura. RIP.

Anyway, read the manga. Dont bother with the 2016 anime at all, it skips one of the most important arcs in the story. The art style doesn't do Miura's work justice, either.

The 97 anime skipped like 75% of the black swordsman arc, which sucks because what they skipped of that arc really sets up our perception of Guts as a character before seeing the golden age.

You absolutely wont regret reading it, it's a master class in dark fantasy

one thing I like about manga is that it changes tones and genres, multiple times throughout, in a way that's consistent with how the story is told

I know! WTF!! To reach that point and just have it not go there was heartbreaking but it definitely fueled a fire in my heart to see the rest and how it plays out

Total insanity the shit the Band of the Hawk found themselves in at the end u.u

Dont doubt it, I know the artwork is really impressive in the manga but I imagine the character development is still just as a good if not even better in the other arcs

I did spoil some of the series for myself and it looks like that becomes the case as more insanity ensues
