Motherfuck this is one of the coolest things I've ever witnessed

watching ep. 1 left me with more questions than answers though so I'm praying there's some more shit I can watch >_________>

Damn son, I even glanced ahead on the video player (Youtube) while watching just because I couldn't contain myself in not knowing what happened next lol

any other good anime like this out there?

I love the 90s series but it cuts out a really good fight close to the end. If you go the manga route, I recommend not skipping what the anime already covered. There's some slight differences that make it still worth reading that part. There's aome things that the anime does better and it's nice to see the difference.

The newer anime is not great. The movies that covered what happens in the 90s series are okay enough. Skullknight gets more screen time. Beyond that they're kind of abridged versions of the show.

The other series is pretty bad. There's a few scenes that are cool to see in motion but beyond that they're pretty meh. There's a lot of terrible computer animation that is outright terrible and takes you out of the scene. There's a famous meme gif where Guts walks away like he's a Southpark character.

They have this pretty rad music with flutes apart from the Guts theme (fantastic as a piece of music on it's own merits) along with the whole thing that really enveloped that world for me

ep. 6 really brought a big build up moment that brought out all the curiosity and questions for the things to come lol

Ya Berserk is one of the GOATs in anime, watch the golden age trilogy movies, they are beautiful pieces of art.

Griffiths speech to the princess is something i always go back to. Its such a beautiful speech, but the implications of that speech are what set everything in the series into motion. Once guts realized he was griffiths servant and would never be viewed as more than that by him because he was a part of his artillery, he made the decision that he wanted to be his equal and that is basically berserk in a nutshell. Guts the struggler who grinds through life versus griffith the kid blessed by the devil. Its poetic as heck.

theres no reason to give one single fuck what anyone else thinks about anything. EVER. The voice acting in the 2016 series is beyond incredible and the color palette is absolutely flawless. Its the Conviction arc and beyond in motion. As I said, theres not one adaptation of the series that does what Id describe as actual justice to the manga, which is the be all end all of fiction series in my opinion, but I take my Berserk in any way I can whenever I can. 97 anime is crap compared to manga, Golden Age trilogy movies are crap compared to manga, 2016 series is crap compared to manga, games are crap compared to manga; it doesnt matter, I consume them all. YEAH! Its such a georgeous theme over certain moments in the series, I feel like they just nailed the placement of it and it definitely sold the entirety of the world of GUTS and co. for me

Trigun did the same thing and the ending theme was so hype that I kept watching through some of the tamer episodes because of that (the People Everyday theme really took those super heartfelt moments I was on the fence about and had me sold)

Heard Champloo was awesome and I remember seeing commercials of the main character on Toonami(?). Always wanted to check that out and Cowboy Bebop but just never really came around. Jojo and Evangelion definitely helped me say alright, I wanna see more of the world of anime this past year since my only experience with anime was basically Ruroni Kenshin, The Big-O, the .Hack series, FLCL, and Yu-Yu Hakusho

been slacking lol

Definitely, the actual Guts theme seems to have 3 main sections

the piano
the ahs that build up to the singing
the actual singing portion and meat of the theme

my favorite section happens to be the build up of voices to the chorus because it sounds like the chaos of the inter contemplation GUTS has every other episode whilst growing to pledge his allegiance to someone, anyone

Not a huge fan of the opening theme to be honest lol same with Trigun (I keep mentioning Trigun because its still relatively fresh in my head)

Def gonna tag everyone in this topic so I dont forget to thank yall for the recs lol

itll remind me to check these out in case I forget too heh

I wouldnt say I particularly go into anything looking or expecting similarities, I sorta keep it on a case by case but if it can bring out feels in me like Berserk did thats an absolute bonus in my book

I keep forgetting stuff like this (media in general) is what propels me and drives me to get inspired to write music - sometimes you sit down and youre like alright Im gonna practice and see what I can write but a lot of my life I've always found its easy to start with a thread of something I heard in the show (Morning Duel is what I wrote on a piece of paper while watching two characters in this series hack it out for the last time before shit goes crazy ((dont wanna mention who just for the sake of spoilers)) and then work whatever comes to mind whether its my experiences, some other idea (the idea of heroes or evil and co. in a general sense), or the actual content into a poem, lyrics, word entries, etc.

helps me remember the series better and internalize it

I gotta recommend Fullmetal Alchemist : Brotherhood. A lot of people swear by the 2003 version, theres some weird changes they make in the story but it does deliver feels if thats what youre looking for, but Brotherhood does that as well as telling the authors story where the 2003 version ending up deviating from the manga.

or is it just so out there that its like a why is this even here type of thing
To me it's like, let's put a scene of things to come in the first episode to grab the interest of our viewers. But then we turn that scene into a whole episode, and also use that exact same episode later in the series where it's more appropriate.

Claymore definitely fits the dark fantasy theme pretty well, but it's another "you have to read twenty more volumes of manga to get the true ending of the story" series due to a filler ending.
Gungrave is pretty good. Definitely skip episode 1 as recommended.

just started berserk for the first time last night and watched the first three episodes. But this is a relatively old series right? I'm watching the 2016 series I think, which has some CGI in it. Is it the same as the 1997 series?

also crazy that the manga author died last month. RIP
