Calling people white, black, yellow, brown has always been weird imo.

Like people with skin tone like Cash Warren calls himself black. Then you have those like Jesse Lingard and hes black. Then Moussa Sissoko skin tone black.

Or maybe your gf is talking about facial features which is different from places to places.
