I've never been there but I have always been under the assumption that it sucks since it's always the butt of jokes

I've been there either on a work trip or driving through a few times. Never had to go to the area near NYC thankfully, I could imagine that being pretty crappy. The western and southern parts of the state at least where it's more scenic / densely populated are actually pretty decent.

But I'm still laughing b/c NJ taxes people like fucking crazy even compared to most blue states (probably only California and Hawaii are worse? and people actually want to live in those states), so even if none of the jokes have merit and Jersey Shore was an elaborate hoax to sully the image of the state, there's still no way in hell it's the best state to live in, especially from the perspective of a company calling itself "WalletHub"

While the USA is on the decline, it seems highly unlikely the rest of the country fallen so far as to make NJ the best state. New England in generally a garbage region.

The Garden State just edged out Massachusetts for top honors, with New York coming in third. In 2019, New Jersey was fourth on the WalletHub list.

*guffaws*

MA? Really? That's one ridiculous North-East bias!

Well, let's see where CT ranks on there...

https://wallethub.com/edu/best-states-to-live-in/62617
22 - Connecticut - 55.05

Well, that's a little high, but not as ridiculous as I expected. They *vastly* overrate CT's education and health, probably because they're looking at entitlement programs. Ranking the state #46 in terms of affordability is certainly fair, though.

It seems like the ratings skew towards arbitrary intangibles, since they have a "QoL" category and a safety category (that doesn't seem to reflect crime rates, since NJ's violent crime rate would put several other states over it yet it's ranked as the safest)

EDIT:

Guess you beat me to the reference >_> I was busy checking citations, though.

Well, the eastern armpit. The western one is in the high desert of SoCal.

My entire experience in New Jersey was basically trying to get into a gas station on the left hand side of the road (where you couldn't turn left), and being told I couldn't pump my own gas once I got there.

Those 10 minutes in that state was enough to last me a lifetime. I never intend to go back.

I think you're referring to Newark, and yea, it's very 'Rough', to say the least...but Jersey City and Hoboken is pretty decent, in some parts.

By law. You're actually supposed to let them service your vehicle and not do it yourself, there.

Do you have to tip the gas pumpers? Seems like a racket.

I tried to pump my own gas and they wouldn't let me. Don't know if I'm "supposed" to tip, but like hell I'm going to for a "service" that was forced upon me, so I didn't.

Yeah, the no left turns was fucking horrible. Have to take a stupid fucking righthand detour around in a loop. My co-worker and I were on a work trip there and literally plotting where to go eat and checking which businesses had adjoining parking lots we could drive through just to avoid that shit.
