Which day was the worst?

Yeah, the Boston Massacre predates the US, but it's still a chapter in our history books.

It has to be the 1929 stock market crash right? Living standards were rock bottom afterwards.

2016 Election Day is a good choice if you're thinking in the long-term, though.

Trumps election if youre thinking long term.

How to spot people with zero common sense. Trump isnt in office anymore and most of his legacy has already been erased. Talk about TFG.

Anyway, its 1929, which directly led to a ton of other horrible events. This is a great poll but it leaves off a ton of things caused by that stock crash.

We would need to corroborate a ton of statistical data amongst schools, but there will surely be a day ranked above all others when the most number of students in America were learning about literary tragedies, likely Shakespearean or Greek.

It's tempting to say 2016 Election Day but I'm going to throw a curveball here and say March 1, 1877 - The Compromise of 1877. In settling a disputed election, Grant and Hayes agreed to end Reconstruction allowing for the rise of Jim Crow. It's goes without saying the ripple effects of sabotaging Reconstruction on the country - we still feel them today.

Look at the state of the Republican party if you think Trump's legacy has been erased. It's potentially an incredibly accurate answer, but not one that can be validated for another few years.

No way, everyone hates him and he got severely punished. The innovation of Reagan was to do horrible anti-conservative stuff and still be hailed as a hero of conservatism and the US in general. Feels before reals.

And the real answer here is clearly 9/11. Between the immediate effects of the deaths and destruction, the long lasting economic fallout, the numerous wars that were directly caused by it, and the resulting polarization/politicization of every goddamn thing which we are still seeing today.

The biggest alternate history what-if is if 9/11 was stopped or never happened.

The Tulsa massacre is a good candidate. Not just for the horrific events, but how it was swept under the rug to the point that many people first heard of it from Watchmen.

On that same note, I'd offer up a candidate in the Wilmington, North Carolina insurrection and massacre - in which a mob of white supremacists murdered and burned down the property of black citizens, forced the legitimately elected mayor, board of alderman, and police chief to resign at gunpoint, and installed their own government, exiled black and white political opposition (who hadn't already fled in terror) from the city by literally marching them out of the city, immediately got to the work of disenfranchising black voters via poll taxes, etc. and again... completely got away with it. Though, in this case, I consider what happened in Wilmington that day (November 10, 1898) to be a direct consequence of the forced ending of Reconstruction as I outlined earlier.
