This occurred within eye sight of my house. There's a large muslim community in my neighbourhood, I see lots of "Free Palestine" signs.

Almost an entire family killed, except for a 9 year old boy who is in critical condition.

I think America is starting to rub off on our little brother. I was afraid of this.

Did... did you not see the story about the hundreds of indigenous children, after having been stolen from their families and sent to Christian schools, were found buried at a single school recently?
Yes..

I didn't realize you were Canadian. That just makes your username and usual posts more confusing.

That's a very amaxophobic remark, tbh.

People have too many shortsighted assumptions about Canada being a 'more peaceful'/better place than the USA. A few things are good, but we have an equally horrible history of white supremacist religious/racist subjugation of the First Nations people, black people (African, Caribbean, etc), Chinese people, Japanese people, minority white groups (Ukrainian) and many others that intermingles with USA racism but has its own colonial roots.

Heck, Vancouver has apparently become the worst city in North America for anti-Asian hate crimes since Covid emerged. Canadians like to be smug about not being as racist as the US, but we're really not in a position to throw stones.

It really jumped out at me how deeply anti-Islam/racist Canadians are when I was going to work one evening a couple years back and a bunch of them (tourists) were on the bus. This was pre covid days so they were talking about how much they liked travelling and going to places like the tropics here. The talk got around to immigration because funnily enough some Canadian guy had been busted here for drug running.

And they were like oh we have a lot of Caribbean people out there (Canada) and some give trouble too. But most of you guys are Christians so that's still better than the Muslims that keep coming from Pakistan etc. This one older woman in particular was really going on about how they can't ever be trusted because one day they'll be your friend and the next a terrorist. And that they were a lot of molesters too. The locals were just as bad as her agreeing with what she said and claiming we don't have those problems with "our ones". I have no idea why I was actually surprised, it just cast off that "nice" rep Canadians have.

Also, I feel like I need to clarify this:

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

While the residential schools were run by the Catholic church, characterizing them as "Christian schools" really fails to capture just how irredeemably awful they were. The program was explcitly intended to eradicate the existing Native culture and "civilize" the children into conforming with the colonizing European/Christian culture. Even without considering the violence, it was a deliberate act of cultural genocide. On top of that, the schools were rife with physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. There are countless stories from survivors of being savagely beaten and tortured (like, nails torn out kind of torture) for speaking their native language or anything else that was abritrarily deemed inappropriate. Those punishments frequently ended up being fatal, and their classmates were expected to accept that. More than accepting it, it wasn't uncommon for kids to be put to work in the infirmary treating their injured classmates and dealing with the ones that succumbed to their injuries. Those 215 kids they found in that mass grave? There's a good chance one of their classmates was made to carry them there. Take a survivor to the site of any former school, and they can probably tell you where a bunch more dead kids are buried (and yet nothing has been done about that...).

I may be mistaken in thinking you're underestimating how horrific the IRS system was, but it really does need to be spelled out. Those children were not the victims of a single, isolated hate crime. It's completely within expectations to find a mass grave near a residential school. I'd be surprised if you could find a single one in the country that hasn't had unidentified remains recovered from it, because it was just that common for kids to be beaten to death. FN populations have suicide rates 5-10 times the national average, almost purely because every community has had 1-2 generations completely broken by systematic abuse and robbed of their cultural identity. Substance abuse issues are similarly prevalent, because how else do you cope with that (and, in turn, how else do their kids cope with their parents being so traumatized)?

Oh, and bonus points? The last one closed in 1996. This barely qualifies as history.

Interesting and sad story. I grew up hearing plenty of racist chants/rhymes/songs from kids in school - I typically know which lines were from movies/TV but others came directly from their parents obviously. Attitudes are still a lot better where I'm originally from (Victoria area), but my sister still hears awful stuff in the ER as a nurse from older nurses. I'm in Kelowna now, and racism is a lot more openly prevalent here. It's pretty amazing how slimy some people can be though - totally act as if they're not racist, then say some insane crap in private.

It was really annoying when traveling - having Americans tell you that you're 'like our nice little brother'.

Uh yeah, I guess so. I understand your simpleton speak. I guess I won't bring up colonial settler-states. Sorry bruh, I'm not a nationalist like you lol.

Canada's administration is really fanning the flames of racism in my opinion.

I mean, already we are seeing increasingly unaffordable cost of living. and a pandemic from abroad which has affected our lives in quite an extreme way. And the government response is keep borders open and ramp up immigration targets. Recipe for disaster.
