Possibly the darkest day since 9/11

But 1/6 is insignificant compared to the Civil War and everything it entailed

I think Id be more inclined to use stronger words if it had been more well organized and actually threatened to be successful. Dropping nuclear weapons on Japan was darker and had more gravity by any serious measure.

9/11, pearl harbor, and JFK were all bad but didn't nearly kill the democracy of the country.

Cuban missile crisis was manufactured outrage. Behind the scenes it was resolved calmly and secretly with mundane diplomacy and was never a crisis at all.

Its up there. People shouldnt be taking it lightly. A large group of traitors stormed our capital, waving a traitorous flag and attempted to overthrow our government and kill politicians so they could essentially make Donald Trump king, which goes against everything the founding fathers would have wanted.

it wasnt a small light event that just came and went. It should not be treated lightly.

Not being the darkest day does not mean it wasn't a dark day. A president had people commit a terrorist attack against the state capitol because he couldn't accept his defeat. He wanted people to die, that's why he delayed help when the people under attack asked for it.

And he IS responsible for it. He wasn't moved to a secure location, as a president would during these scenarios. Almost as if he knew he wasn't in danger....

Well yes, other domestic terrorism attacks were dark and worse in terms of death count, but if were talking merely threats to the US as a nation, and the potential for the country to fall, this event beats all that. It lit the fuse on something still active. Republicans refuse to acknowledge it or do anything about it. The traitors werent shut down and stopped. They were just placed behind the curtain for later.

and as soon as someone got rightfully popped, that insurrection ended real fast. The LARPERS tucked their tail between their legs and scurried off.

and to answer the question - not the darkest, most certainly the most embarrassing.

They are all terrorists and should be imprisoned for a minimum of 5-10 years. Every congressperson that spoke support for them or egged it on should also be arrested and permanently banned from politics.

Those rednecks came closer to killing our democracy than Lee Harvey Oswald did.

It's hard to fully grasp just how bad shit could have gotten and even how bad the shit that did happen was. For hundreds of years the term limits of the president have normalized a peaceful transition of power. We see that eroding in places like Russia and China now who both just passed methods to remain in power for life. Things always get worse after that, not better.

Even during the civil war the South threw a fit but Buchanan made no attempt to prevent Lincoln from assuming the office. 1/6 is the first time in history when this suddenly came under question. We had just taken it for granted before.

Fair point but the belief that 9/11 is a lot worse than 1/6 isn't a weird or strange opinion to have, and certainly no rational person could chalk that opinion up to lack of education.

We watched 3,000 people die on live TV, but at least the president didn't plan it.

and I didnt even touch on this - 9/11 killed over 3k people that day and possibly thousands more due to the after math of the attacks. Grief, depression and sickness took many lives well after that day.

9/11 is definitely a top 5 dark moment in US history and if anyone thinks 1/6 was worse, they werent alive to see or feel the effects it had on the country.

Americans didn't plan 9/11. And I was alive then. Watched Navy jets scramble from Cape Cod NAS to fly air cover for NYC and beyond. There are foreigners all over who wish to materially harm the U.S. Not a new thing.
