An illegal bitcoin mine has been found by police in the U.K. who were looking for a cannabis farm. The mine located in an industrial unit on the outskirts of the English city of Birmingham was stealing thousands of pounds worth of electricity from the mains supply, West Midlands Police said Thursday. Police searched the unit in Sandwell on May 18 on the back of intelligence that led them to believe it was being used as a cannabis farm. Lots of people were visiting the unit at various points of the day, police said, adding there was lots of wiring and ventilation ducts visible A police drone also detected a lot of heat coming from the building.

These are all classic signs of a cannabis farm, police said. However, officers found a bank of around 100 computers and zero cannabis on entering the building. Its certainly not what we were expecting, Jennifer Griffin, Sandwell police sergeant, said in a statement. It had all the hallmarks of a cannabis cultivation set-up and I believe its only the second such crypto mine weve encountered in the West Midlands. Bitcoin miners use purpose-built computers to solve complex mathematical equations that effectively enable a bitcoin transaction to go through. The miners are rewarded for their efforts in the digital currency. However, the entire process is incredibly energy intensive because of the amount of power used by the computers. Bitcoin has a carbon footprint comparable to that of New Zealand, producing 36.95 megatons of CO2 annually, according to Digiconomist. My understanding is that mining for cryptocurrency is not itself illegal but clearly abstracting electricity from the mains supply to power it is, Griffin said. On Wednesday, Irans government announced a ban on the mining of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, as officials blame the energy-intensive process for blackouts in a number of Iranian cities.

it's technically illegal where i am, but its decriminalized and the police don't really care unless you're doing something like selling it to kids, or just being obnoxious about it.

like i wonder if those cops were actually thinking shutting down a weed farm was going to benefit society in some way

that's mentioned in, like, the 2nd sentence of the OP.

Stealing electricity is still illegal, no matter the laws on weed. I'm sure the person paying the electricity bill is happy with this being shut down.

i was under the impression the electric theft wasn't discovered until after the place was raided? the OP makes it sound like the cops scouted the spot and saw activity "typical" of a weed farm and that gave them probable cause to search.

if the electrical theft is what lead the police to conduct the raid then i totally get it. because, yeah, theft is bad.

Some places in the UK have effectively put it as decriminalised for personal use, but yeah we're really fucking backwards in general on it. It's not even considered a minor drug either.

it's technically a Schedule 1 in the USA

Schedule I drugs, substances, or chemicals are defined as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Some examples of Schedule I drugs are:

that is so utterly absurd i'd laugh my ass off if it didn't ruin so many lives

It's a Class B in the UK, so up to five years and unlimited fine just for having any on you. But, many many many police forces won't bother you if it's just personal use and aren't flaunting it. They will go after those selling/producing it though.

It shouldn't even be on the fucking schedule at all. As a matter of fact it should literally be regulated by the ATF and not the FDA at all. The FDA can still regulate the medicinal applications.

I still can't comprehend the reasoning behind cannabis being upgraded to class B. Literally one of the biggest missteps of the last Labour government that further alienated their voter base and contributed to over a decade of unelectability.

Look, if they keep appealing to Tory voters then they'll keep voting Tory and their own will simply become apathetic and not vote. Simple. What's not to get about Labour's winning strategy?

If you're using it to treat seizures then it needs to be regulated and FDA approved. If you're just adding it to food for whatever then no it doesn't need to be regulated.

Everything no matter what it is if it's being prescribed for seizures then the FDA needs to sign off on something saying it's okay to prescribe it to treat seizures whether it's hemp, nutmeg, nutgig, or Deez nuts.

Of course this thread became an argument over the legality of cannabis. The police were notified of an insane amounts of electricity being used in a curious place, THAT is how they found the place. The police weren't "wasting time and resources" by driving around trying to sniff out cannabis farms.

I mean, they literally raided it because the heat emissions and ventilation ducts and wiring made them think it was a cannabis farm, but okay.

even in places where weed is legal you cant run a giant cannabis farm on your own. In MA you can grow 6 plants, thats it

That's how they came to an initial conclusion that is was a cannabis farm, it is not how they found the place to begin with.
