Do you think this was a bad message to post outside?

The Steak 48 restaurant, a Philadelphia steakhouse has sparked outrage after putting up this sign telling diners before entering the upscale eatery!!

It's a family-run chain that was slammed for imposing this rule as it was shared on twitter on the outrageous sign

Social media was quick to react as it also enforces a strict dress code which has locations in Houston, Chicago and Charlotte

It's known for its stylish location for people to take instagram pictures with but this will likely deter potential customers which also does not include tax and tip!!

It boasts a lot of upscale dishes including 22 oz ribeye steak for $68, seabass costing $53 and a 12oz steak fillet with an egg for $65

To get a side dish alongside their main course, customers must spend anything from $9 for whipped potatoes to $23 for double baked truffle potatoes.

Customers will no longer be able to just have specialty cocktails that people often enjoy while taking selfies on instagram that cost $18

Some users were already outraged over the message but to now impose a dress code is also crossing the line

Do you think this message is outrageous?

I've been to plenty of nice, high end restaurants. This is highly abnormal and weird. I probably would opt for a different restaurant even if I was planning to spend $100 at a steakhouse (which I have done before), because this just feels sketchy and I question their intentions.

WTF do you even get for $100 there?
Could be even worse than first appears and they charge like $40 for half a dozen mozzarella sticks appetizer and so on.

what im saying is that 100 dollars is more than a normal meal there so its unreasonable to have the minimum that high

Personally, $100 minimum is quite high, even for an upscale. But being that they have all these instagram loser coming in and buying one cocktail to hang out and take pictures, I can't say I blame em. Their store, their rules. I can't afford Outback, so it doesn't affect me anyways?!

If that's the restaurant they're running I guess they can do what they want. If they can get customers in there willing to do that then it makes sense for some places to do that. With fancy ass places like that it can be surprisingly easy to hit that $100 with a good steak and a few drinks.

Ok, but to-go containers are a thing (unless this place considers itself too "high class" for that as a loophole....). Obviously the $100 min. sucks no matter what, but if it bought enough food to have a dinner there and then like 2-3 reheated meals later on, at least the value of what you get is not bad.

Vs. "the steaks are all $80 just on their own, so the minimum meal cost was pretty pointless to add"

While I'd choose neither, if I had to, I'd much rather take option 1...

Its an asshole decision but its probably working as intended. People that get pissed off probably werent ever gonna even hear about the restaurant, but now theyve got a bunch of free advertising and some people can impress a date by bringing them to that stupid fancy restaurant theyve heard about where theres a mandatory minimum.

If their goal was to stop dumb selfie/Instagram type people from hanging out there, then why not ban the use of phones within the restaurant?

Also, they cant legally enforce a minimum spending limit on food/merchandise at any place anywhere in America.

Well Honestly theres no world where a drink costs enough to meet a 50 dollar minimum, which makes more sense.

My friend treated me to really fancy steak house and each of our steaks was $40-50 dollars and with a few sides it came up to around $100.

they can actually since theyre communicating it beforehand

if someone refused to pay after eating they could be arrested or charged but they would also be free to sue the restaurant owner, but theyd have to convince a judge that they werent aware of the minimum purchase requirement, since knowledge of it before ordering would most likely be viewed as agreement to the contract

It's a high end restaurant, people should expect to spend a ton of money on food there. Especially a high end Steak restaurant. And yea, any business would be pissed if you sit at a table for an hour and only order a drink or two, especially if they have customers willing to have a full meal waiting for a table outside.

I would be more pissed if the place looked like a greasy spoon on the outside, then when you got inside it was actually a 5 star restaurant with a minimum 5 course meal.

Okay so heres the menu:
https://www.steak48.com/steakhouses/philadelphia/
And I honestly cant see myself eating $100 worth of food just by myself.

Even if we are taking into consideration that this is a fine dining experience.

If I am getting one of their steaks for $59-68 dollars (highest is $74). That still leaves roughly 30$-40 dollars left. After that I cant just get a salad because thats a low dollar item at only $12-15 dollars (for a salad lol). So immediately we look to appetizers which range from $10-24 dollars, with two outliers, one being $29 dollars but that wouldnt bridge your gap. It would take the $48 dollar Chicken Fried Lobster Tails to close that gap. They have other $30 dollar choices like the fresh seafood towers but like the appetizers these are things more meant to be shared rather then be consumed by a solo person.

This system just doesnt seem plausible to be honest. It seems like it requires every person to be able to eat like a pig. Pretty much all the times I have been priveleged enough to dine at a high class restaurant it was because I was being treated by a wealthy person. What is a person to do if they are treating a group (including himself) of seven people? Is the solo man, no matter how rich expected to buy seven hundred dollars worth of food? Even the most expensive thing on the menu is $74 dollars which still leaves a $24 dollar difference. Like per person, this is absurd. Then the cherry on top is that it doesnt include tax or the tip, lol!

And you don't get anything to drink? Their drink menu is $20 - $40 per drink (some are as high as $300 for top shelf). You could easily hit $100 for just steak and a couple drinks. So yea, $100 minimum is not hard.

In no way am I saying any reasonable person should be spending $100 on a meal you can make at home for 1/5 that. But if a business can make money off a people who will, I am not going to get angry about it. I'll just eat my meal somewhere more reasonably priced.
