And reminder: tons of other sites have had non-anonymous mods for decades and not shit has happened. I'm so sick of this "internet trolls are going to get me fired" fear mongering. It's bullshit. You think CE's little subreddit is bad? I spent a decade on a Trek forum that had it's own website dedicated to bringing it down. They even named it Troll Kingdom and it was filled with nothing but about 100 people who spent their time trying to troll that Trek forum. They knew where all the moderators lived and worked, and even under all that, the Trek mods still weren't anonymous. The harassment argument is bullshit.

Your argument that mods shouldn't be anonymous is to point out a website where people got harassed by users who made an entire website about it? Wouldn't that be an argument in FAVOR of making it anonymous? Because the shit that happened is people made a website to troll all the moderators, which means according to what you just said the gamefaqs mods should just reveal themselves and deal with the harassment or they're weak or something?

Gamespot mods who have operated under the same NDA openly talk about which mod deletes what, so this anonymity thing is solely a gfaqs decision.

I got modded for double posting. The posts were actualy 24hrs apart. The mod mistakenly believed the posts were within seconds of each other, and when I made a topic about it, they still didn't bother fixing it.

Same, but almost a month apart and on different boards. Imagine following my message history like that for all that time.

If moderations clearly said who modded what, you'd have moderators taking s*** that shouldn't matter into account, such as am I gonna get a callout topic on CE about the moderation, or if this person is well liked will that make the users on a board I may post on dislike me. etc etc

And yet community board owners/leaders go through this every day.

I got banned

lightning handles the blacklist, ask him about it

'Every mod gets assigned a number identifier that's stamped on every moderation' I'm surprisingly ok with this.

I've been requesting that for years...

When I think of it I can understand the outrage. For instance I have been trying to get help on stackoverflow because some of my questions are answered there but not all of them. This leads me to think that the area of my technical problems is of interest on stackoverflow because it gets discussed there. Every single question I post gets excluded. I think one of their moderators is targetting me.

Perhaps the worst part about secret mods is that they can lock topics, remain secret, and if the user asks why, they moderate that user, and still remain hidden. And if the user asks why they got moderated, they get moderated more harshly...and the moderator is never revealed, and never has to explain himself. Not even after contesting when it's upheld.

Honestly if the moderators never intend to provide anything like a reason and just delete anything they want why do they even bother pretending like there is a deliberative process.

Dont bother with moderation ids or queues. Just delete whatever it is and stop wasting everyones time.

This is a call for a return to the original system. Moderated messages all used to be tagged with the name of the acting moderator.

I dont care how you guys handle it on your end. But why do you bother us with such a ill conceived process when we have neither any input in or basic insight into what the hell the mod is thinking? Just make the messages disappear.
