I can understand the alleged insidious motives behind other conspiracy theories, but this one I don't quite understand. Why would they trick us into believing the earth is round? What is the agenda here.

I think there are various different theories all under one umbrella. Remember when we had that young Earth creationist dude/troll posting here? He was all about how the purpose of science was to make people stop believing in God so they'd be easy to control. Then there's the pure profit motive UR cited. But it's also part of the conspiracy that we don't know why, because they're keeping it secret.

For most flat earthers it is a religious thing -- the true world is flat, beneath the earth is another plane of existence (hell) and the stars and space are not what they say they are. They're unknowable heavenly objects in another plane (heaven). Beyond the edge of the world is a massive plain of ice inhabited by giant beasts

The reason NASA lies about this is because they have been corrupted by Satan, and by hiding the true nature of the world leads people away from god. The only people who actually know are the illuminati, who control NASA and everything, and the NASA agents just get paid hush money or something

Most of the people are just mentally unwell and are being taken advantage of financially. It's pretty sad.

They want to have a truth greater than everyone else. They want to feel important because they're lacking something in their lives, like they're in on something normal people cannot understand. It's like a lite version of a cult. It's just a stupid but easily accessible one because there's no objective way to actually "prove" the Earth is round through a single individual's eyesight alone. This leaves them free to easily claim their truth is real because they dumb down the argument and claim everything else is false.

I thought so too, but there are atheists in it. The fundamental core, as with most conspiracy theories, is having a "secret", being privy to knowledge that the masses can't handle, because you are exceptional. It doesn't matter what it is, just that you have the hill to die on.

It's stupid, but my assumption has always been (to their benefit) that they didn't actually believe that, and flat earth was just a metaphor for questioning the foundations of how people come to their conclusions. I want to believe it's an exercise in making people actually do research, rather than just take others at their word. Scientists say whatever, and people just take it at face value without looking at the research, which is readily provided, which is as dangerous as just taking a preacher's interpretation of the bible, which is readily provided, that sort of thing.

That's what I want to believe, because otherwise it's just mental defectiveness, pure and simple.

Flat earthers believe it because its how they read the bible.

NASA (and the world) deny the flat earth BECAUSE they hate God.

These are literally the main reasons for their belief in a flat earth.

There are probably some flat earthers who don't' realize this basis, but the core of the flat earther movement is it is supposedly biblical, and any authority who denies a flat earth is doing it to spite God.

Any other goals of the conspiracy theory are secondary to this main one.

It's a consequence of poor science education and a complete lack of faith in institutions, received knowledge, and gatekeepers. Plus like others say, some have religious motivations and most want to or benefit from feeling like they have secret knowledge that others are just too brainwashed to discover.

I don't think it's a coincidence that conspiracism has grown so much post Watergate, Vietnam, the collapse of the middle class, the financial crisis etc. People used to trust without investigating, but now people just trust different things after an incompetent Facebook group and Youtube based investigation.

There will naturally be tons of theories mixing bible verses (Genesis, Isaiah, Revelation, etc), and modern evidence, and different translations of the bible (different bible translations try to shift the translation a bit to emphasize or de-emphasize what they want to), and finally interpretations of those verses on top of all that.

the reasoning is that the known earth is only a small part of the whole earth and that there's more continents "they" are keeping hidden from us beyond the flat earth ice wall. so "they" have access to the land and resources that the rest of us don't

it's stupid but until then I thought it was just random with no real reason why
