Oh man, the boss at floor 5 of the old schoolhouse kicked my ass. I had to go grind everyone 2 levels and still just barely won. It was some like big ice dragon thing that can freeze people constantly

yeah CS1 has some potentially annoying bosses around that part of the game if you aren't blocking their status effects.

yeah I had another rough one in laura's home town castle against a spooky skeleton, that one took me a few tries but it wasn't as bad as that ice dragon.

i'm up to the cold open part 2. I am glad shit is getting real / meeting up with crossbell now :) but I know I still have a ways to go before I see everything that I saw in azure

Floor 6 of the schoolhouse was then pathetically easy. The real hard fight was the 1-on-1 with Angelica. I had to retry like 10 times before she didn't just one shot me with her s craft

I really hate how they unequip all of your other party members when you start a field study. I already have everyone's equipment where I want it, it's just annoying having to go reequip everyone later

I just realized you can disable support crafts you don't want them to use. Somehow never noticed that before

Just got Randy back and I'm at the point where I don't want to leave anyone on the bench. Tough choices have to be made

Noel redemption arc was pretty good

That fight against Zack at Mishelem right before the mansion was such a pain. I had to spam those items that increase your burst meter to beat it

Where in the story was this one? I don't remember that fight to be honest. Generally you just want to spam your strongest map wide spell with Tio and pray against those multi enemy fights

This is when you first enter the mansion on Mishelem, so you probably get Elie right after this

It starts with just two of them but he keeps summoning more/resummoning if they die

I equipped Randy and Rixia with the arts canceling quartz and gave Wazy enough Water to get the all-enemies water attack which I used whenever he got 2 mobs out. Then I just had the other 3 bait them while Wazy took them out and attacked the boss when I could. It just gets out of control when he gets 5 or 6 of those things out there lmao

It doesn't make sense. If I use an item or spell that cures "all status effects" it cures the pepper effect but Grail Locket stops "all status effects" but doesn't work? I demand consistency!

Anyway it took me about 3 or 4 tries to beat him. It wasn't as hard as I originally thought, but it was a pretty annoying fight

New Game+ with stats, equipment, quartz, etc. carried over + turbo + fast forward through dialogue makes it go by really fast!

I don't ever fast forward through dialogue or skip cutscenes. If I'm playing a story focused game, I want to take in the story. There isn't an RPG in the world where I love the gameplay enough to play it just for that.

I mean yeah but if I just took in the story yesterday I don't need to read it again yet!

It's mostly just to get the trophies, and also Zero and Azure have missions that are New Game+ only and near the end of the game. Of course, I don't skip through anything I didn't see in the first playthrough, and I will rewatch some cutscenes if I forgot what happened or if it was a particularly great scene

I mean that's not replaying the game. I'll skip ahead to the next route in a single playthrough just because there's no other way to do it (I do save frequently and have multiple save files if I think I'm near a divergence point though so I can go right to it). If I were to replay the whole game, I'd read everything.

I did about 500 damage and got one-shotted by her S-Craft... which apparently isn't good enough. Or this isn't the unwinnable fight I assumed you were talking about

You have to do a certain amount of damage first before you're "allowed" to lose. You'll know when it is.

Try to max out Lloyd's evasion and lock her in a corner with Lloyds craft that drags her towards him, and then you'll need to get your casters with as much magic damage as you physically can and just start blasting

It's damage on Normal too. You have to break her mask before the fight can end.

I played Azure on hard. I'm sure it's stupid on nightmare, but the general strategies you use should still be the same. I gave up on nightmare after sky1 when I was naive about the series...probably reset hundreds of times through the early game alone but it got easier the further I got, but I had already decided to never subject myself to that in a trails game again.

Though I am playing cold steel on Nightmare again since I heard the difficulty was drastically reduced. I have had a few hard fights but definitely nothing as bad as trails 1 nightmare...not even close

I got her unmasked form close to half HP before she started zeroing in on Wazy (my Earth Wall user) and then she hit an S-Craft before I could get him revived and walled up... oh well good enough!

I'm not really trying to beat them. I mean, I'm not losing on purpose but I'm not spending any time coming up with a strategy. If I don't get it on the first attempt oh well

Fair enough. I don't get why you'd play on Nightmare if you don't feel like trying to tackle that challenge though, but that's just me. All or nothing!

In other news, the song that plays when you're infiltrating the mine when the terrorists are there at the end of chapter 6 in CS is an absolute bop. It's the first song I've actually thought was really good in this game. Most of the tracks have been pretty whatever

To Become the Foundation of the World

Roer, Through the Canyon Road, and Skies of a Strange Land (and others you have heard yet) are better, but you're right that the Cold Steel series has a weaker soundtrack in general

Cold Steel OST is great. It's just different from Sky and Crossbell.

CS1 is overall a well-balanced and good OST. It just doesn't have as many standouts that really jump out. Though arguably if you look at the average quality of every track it's one of the best in the CS series.

It's just missing a Blue Destination/Spiral of Erebos/To the Future
