Because there's a lot wrong with most anime, such that enjoying it requires one to ignore the bad parts and focus on the good. When somebody starts pointing out the bad things, it dismantles that illusion, so people get defensive about it.

I'd say a combination of the fact that any kind of art is subjective, and also many anime fans are not able to remain calm and rational about their favorite things.

Because most rabid anime fans(as per it's demographic) are either teenagers and children or manchildren who haven't grown past the teenage mentality of "X is good so anything that isn't X or similar is trash".

For a long time, anime / manga fandom -- one can argue that it is mainstream, these days, but I respectfully disagree -- did not have to deal with those types of complaints the way that Western media fandoms did, but I have noticed that it is starting to take hold. Japanese content creators generally do not care about this sort of thing, but the distributors, notably Sony, are starting to shift their censorship more towards U.S. norms.

Worse, humans are tribal little animals, and in a world where we're constantly trying to batter down all distinctions between people, we latch on to tons of other things to try and define our sense of identity. We define ourselves by what our jobs are, what hobbies we have, who our favorite sports team is, what political party we support, what shows we watch, what foods we eat (pineapple on pizza? You're worse than Hitler!).

Even more inanely, we'll define ourselves by what piece of electrical hardware we play video games on, and then savagely shit on anyone who chooses a different system, as if their choices somehow devalue our own, and thus ourselves as a person.

Too much of our self-image as thinking beings is tied up into things outside of ourselves, and we view attacks on those things as attacks on ourselves. And then we attack back.

And in the modern Internet age everything is extremely polarized, so there are only two forms of expression - total enthusiastic agreement or venomous disdain. Neutral opinions are neither recognized nor respected. You're with me or against me. If you don't like the shows I love, you're probably a baby murderer.

Considering the usual types of people that go hard on social justice, and the types of fans who love yaoi, I'd assume the SJW crowd would actually demand that all anime have mandatory yaoi scenes, not push to get rid of them.

The Yaoi Generation is the generation before the Social Justice era. They share the same all-or-nothing attitude, but Social Justice tends to be anti-sex, especially in the creative spaces of fandom. The two groups are not friendly towards each other.
