I like the GTA games, but I wished there was some incentive to causing chaos other than getting killed by cops.

At least in something like Saints Row you earn stuff from doing gang related activities

They already did that. It's called GTA V

its difficult to explain. The gameplay in V is definitely better, and theres definitely way more to do, but theres just something about IV that makes me like it more. The city feels more alive, and thus more immersive to me.

I love both games though.

GTA IV and GTA V but they focus on stuff that is actually fun to do instead of trying to be like a movie with boring cinematics and scripted setpieces.

Edit: I'll settle for them just implementing the drug dealing from Chinatown Wars into GTA IV.

What's not fun about gta V? IV is my fav but V is good too.

I can't quite ever put my finger on it.

On paper I should love the game, but every time I've tried playing it since it came out I just... can't do it. I can't get into it. Driving isn't fun, exploring the map isn't fun, I can't get invested in the characters, none of the side activities grab my interest. I don't know what it is.

I'll settle for no more rage engine, I hate the physics of the new games and always go back to San Andreas.

I played gta 5 for a couple of hours recently since I regrettably bought it on sale against my better judgment and yeah it's basically Gta 4 all over again. Discount CJ's slow down time ability was fun but it's still not enough to warrant how terrible these games became. Only series I can think of that got worse (gameplay wise) instead of better.

Likewise. I'll admit I was predisposed to hating it since it looked exactly like GTA 4, having the same gameplay mechanics, HUD, stupid cellphone input etc etc and basically didn't "fix" what was wrong with 4 like everyone promised me it did when I initially passed on it for the past 8 years.

But even when I gave it a full week to try and get into it, I just wasn't feeling it. Doing the missions where I'm chasing a car, or shooting down people, or whatever... it just isn't fun.

I definitely don't like the 3 protagonist thing. Some people like the variety but I'm fine with just the one. Everything about the game reminds me of the phrase "more is not better"

Lol I wouldn't phrase it this way, but I had trouble getting into gta5 myself. I had thought it was just that I'd gotten over the genre, but I've since played saints row games and liked them. Could possibly just mean I should try gta5 again

They're just really hard to connect with an root for.

Compare with John Marston and Arthur Morgan who actually have some decent writing behind them

I too was going with the idea that "maybe I've outgrown the series" but I had replayed both San Andreas and GTA 3 a few years ago and they were still damn fun, 3 nostalgically so.

I find it almost impossible to go back to the PS2 era GTA games. SA is the least bad because at least it has manual camera control and lets you aim weapons, but it still feels like a janky mess of a game. It's hard to believe I used to be glued to it for hours

That's a good way to put it with these characters. I think when they stopped paying homages to movies and iconic character influences, their quality really took a nosedive, starting with 4 and the horribly whiny, unlikable niko dude.

3's protagonist was a blank slate sure, but 4 was pretty much a combination of scarface and other mafia movies like goodfellas, with tommy vercetti literally voiced by ray liotta for good measure. Similarly, San Andreas started off being reminiscent of movies like boyz in the hood and menace to society (before becoming hilarious with stuff like Area 51 and owning a casino) and was just fun about what it was.

These new protagonists, it's just like... okay? Those 3 words are pretty succinct descriptions of what they are: uninteresting, uninspired and just plain annoying.

I actually have this same issue. I've played it twice now and both times I've just kind of trailed off shortly after the torture mission. The story just isn't all that engaging and it's a pretty big focus. The three character gimmick isn't something I particularly like, especially when Franklin doesn't really have a reason to even exist in the storyline.

I overall think it's an improvement on IV but yeah there's still a few things I hope they fix in the next game

• Rockstar really need to take advantage of the genre more. We've got an open world game that fails you if you even attempt to stray from the path. There's no room at all for player experimentation or agency in the story missions
• The story for GTAV just loses focus once the characters are all united and just sort of ends with no build up. I remember San Andreas feeling like a damn adventure by the end of the game.
• More interesting side content. Stranger missions are fun and it's cool how they tie into the heist missions. But c'mon it's nowhere near as fun as what the old games had. Sometimes it's like Rockstar are afraid of making a video game.
