Im sure Kevin Smith is gonna do everything in his power to satisfy all the 30-40 year olds who still fondly remember He-Man for stuff outside of memes.

Probably gonna be mid but people are gonna eat it up anyway, just like most of the Castlevania anime

Different target audiences

One was for tumblr girls who wanted Steven Universe with the soul stripped out of it, and this one is for 40 year old men who want the see the exact thing they saw 30+ years ago (and want to feel what they felt back then too) but with edge this time

She-Ra was great.

This one seems okay from just that screenshot. We'll see if it holds up to the 2002 show

Wait, is that really CGI?

I have high hopes for it but do not think it will rise to the level of the new dreamworld she ra show even if the target audience for the she ra show is basically children.

i know thats not the actual age of the audience but its pretty clear that was where they were going.

Given that Kevin Smith is at the helm, I've set my expectations accordingly. In fact, I've set them so low that I'll be indifferent if/when it tanks.

The art mostly looks okay (in some cases it's very in-line with previous versions), although the butch Teela and jawa Orko both look terrible. I like that they're going with a puny Prince Adam because it gives a nicer contrast against his alter-ego.

I like that it's effectively a continuation of the original series rather than a full reboot, since we've already had a reboot (which I never watched).

MrMelodramatic posted...

Because it was actually lousy? The art sucked, the action sequences were animated poorly, the character designs were bad, and most of the characters were whiny.

Granted, back when She-Ra was running, it would have made sense to connect the two simply because you could have a cross-over, but they seem fundamentally different.

tbh, you're probably closer to my ignore list than pionear is these days. Also it's stupid that this topic is where you talk about drawing the line, rather than all of his shitty race-bait topics or when he shared the ridiculous, obviously false claim that over a third of Americans can't name an Asian-American.

Considering She-Ra only lasted a few years and had minimal merchandise, I'm not sure how popular it actually was. This will likely be bigger just because it's a more established property.

???

the art was gorgeous, the characters were well written, and the action was perfectly suitable for an all-ages show. she ra ran for a successful five seasons, all of which are highly lauded and rated. I think four of the five seasons hold a 100% on rotten tomatoes. It also won a few awards and has been nominated for a bunch more (including a Hugo this year).

lol. I mean, it wasn't as good as DreamWorks' Voltron reboot for sure. But it was like hundred times better than the original in every way.

Damn this new service Netflex sounds awesome, I really like the idea of a streaming service built around flexing.

He-Man is a great start on a service like that.

I mean the original show is not that great, I'm sure to most 10 year olds or younger He-Man was magnificent but really the show does not hold up well at all.

Kings don't need physical strength and it provides a better contrast, as well as making the secret identity seem like it could be a secret.

The art was some terrible tumblr shit, the characters were crap for s1 which was the only season I bothered watching, and -- again -- the action sequences were terribly animated. And it didn't run for "five seasons" (at least not by any conventional definition of seasons), it was broken into five parts across 2 years and consists of only *52* episodes, which is what you'd expect from a 2-season cartoon. (By the way, the original She-Ra ran for 93 episodes.) And most of the praise was for the LGBT and all-inclusive themes rather than the quality of the content, and how could anybody compliment its quality? It was lousy.

No, it really wasn't. I wound up watching part of the original a few years (around the same time I was watching the original MotU and New Adventures) and was pleasantly surprised. Meanwhile the reboot I kinda had to force myself to get through the first season because it just never got good.

Was it as bad as the Carmen Sandiego reboot? idk, it's a bit of a toss-up. The Carmen reboot I dropped at the start of the second "season," whereas I had lost interest in She-Ra before even starting the second "season"

I've never seen a single second of He-Man outside memes and the iconic scene with the sword. THis show came out in 1985, who even cares about it at this point.

Anybody born before 1985, for starters, as well as whoever watched the 2000s reboot although I guess you were probably too young to have watched that, too.

Looks better than that garbage She-Ra reboot that had worse animation than the original and made me want to gouge my eyes out.

It could still be as awful as the She-Ra reboot, though.

No, you're absolutely wrong. In most regards -- certainly the ones that matter -- the original was superior. The one and only thing the reboot might have had going for it was more continuity, but that's not something that the reboot came up, that's just a norm for modern cartoons.

LOL.

The original was worse in every way. Thundercats and He-Man are super cheesy and stilted, but OG She-Ra makes both of them look like JLU by comparison. Awful in all aspects.

The original had better animation. No doubt. The new one's animation is AWFUL. And yes, I have seen She-Ra in the last year or so - so it isn't just nostalgia.

You can even see in these side-by-side character comparisons how terrible the new characters look:

That is an art style comparison, not an animation comparison. Art style is highly subjective.

The original She-Ra was animated like a Scooby Doo cartoon.
