Do you agree with that?

I think there are people not doing as well financially as they could and some of that I think is due to greed at the top. It's estimated that 1% own 40% of the country's wealth while the bottom 80% own just 7% of the nation's wealth so clearly, something here is wrong.

This also cuts across racial lines so there is that.

> The average rent for a 1-bedroom in L.A. today sits at around $2296 per month

Therefor anyone in LA not earning AT LEAST 30k per year is impoverished... and probaly still 'poor' up to like 45k

I suspect it won't for long; though in the sense of 'everyone will be poor' instead of 'removing racial lines'.

If Smaug was real, he would only be the 15th richest billionaire in the U.S. So we've got at least 14 people who are richer than a gold hoarding dragon.

Source?

I'm not objecting or anything (I'd totally believe it) but I wanna know how they arrived at that number.

I do feel most people say they're middle class not knowing that they're lower class.
I feel "wealthy", but rarely am I above the second spot for annual salaries on a survey.

Whenever I hear middle class, I ask, "what is that even?". I've heard 250k from wealthy people, and among the less wealthy, it muddles.
America has a lot of poor people who at least don't feel it as much and wouldn't say they're poor.

Most of it depends on location. In my area, I am technically upper class, but if I had the same income in say LA, I would be considered lower class.

By your metric of wealthy people, I am in poverty though...

I'm not saying it's my metric. I think it may be reality but I don't have any sources to back it up.

I mean, does anybody really wanna consider themself working poor? It's a depressing reality.

If I had to put an arbitrary number on it, I'd probably say at about 32k a year, you're not too low on the pole and should be able to afford luxuries like vacations, large TVs and what not, without having to scrape by for it.

I agree with that, and see it as only likely to get worse. Funny that countries think continual growth is a realistic goal and that GDP is a good measure of human quality of life.

Americans are taxed more on their income on average than Canadians. I've seen this demonstrated via statistics many times. Even when it's argued the other way, it's extremely close. They don't get to keep all their taxes. Unless they're rich.

**actually let me just be transparent and indicate that they swap places historically, but it's funny how many people generally think "Canadians are taxed a ton" and "Americans are not taxed".

https://tinyurl.com/5r3fmxvm

Less of the USA's taxes go to the people. More of their taxes go to the military.

Anytime you see Smaug's net worth mentioned, the number comes from this Forbes article:
