I thought it would just be 10 / 1.5? So 6.6, or 6 minutes 40 seconds.

You guys are making me doubt myself after reading this though lol.

If everyone is so sure about their answers, why don't they try making a 10 minute audio file, speeding it up to 1.5x normal, and time how long it takes to play back?

just use your brain

CuriousPoops posted...

if a 10 minute video takes 10 mins at regular 1x speed, and 5 mins at 2.x speed, therefore watching it at 1.5x (halfway between 1x and 2x) speed would take 7 min 30 sec (halfway between 10 and 5 mins)

This doesn't work because it's not a linear relationship.

10^2 = 100
20^2 = 400
So clearly, since 15 is half way between 10 and 20, that means 15^2 = 250, right? Oh, no, that's wrong, 15^2 = 225. Because that's not a linear relationship either.

But you already know all this and are just trolling.

For those who are actually still confused and would like a better explanation with more descriptive language instead of just numbers:

You need to establish your equation properly first. We know the video length is 10 minutes (600 seconds). We want to know what the duration is when the speed of playback is changed. It's pretty common sense that the speed modifier would be a multiplier ("2 times normal speed", "6 times as fast", etc.) When we use the word 'times' in language it means multiplication. So we have the basic setup for the equation. "10 minutes is equivalent to some duration at 1.5 times speed." We want to find that duration, so that's what we make our variable.

"10 minutes" -> 600
"is equivalent to" -> 600 =
"some duration" -> 600 = x
"at 1.5 times speed" -> 600 = 1.5*x

This is how you turn the question in sentence form into an equation in mathematical form.
600 = 1.5x

Then, since you're trying to find the value for x, you isolate that variable to one side by dividing both sides by 1.5:
600 / 1.5 = (1.5x)/1.5
Then simplifying:
400 = x

So the duration we're looking for is 400 seconds. Converted into minutes gives us 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

At least a couple of us have already done this. Not sure if the people arguing that 6 minutes 40 seconds is wrong after the fact are serious or trolling.

That doesn't even make any sense. My explanation makes more sense and is easier to comprehend and is intuitive. Occam's Razor, man.
In mathematics, Occams Razor is literally never used. Mathematically, this has already been proven several times. Just stop trolling over something that is now just making you look bad.

A friend of mine said 4 minutes.

Could someone calculate exactly how much watched video that would be at 1.5x speed?

I'm still a bit lost on this math riddle. :/

I'm not sure what you're asking exactly?

If it's a 4 minute (240 second) video and you want to know how long it would take to watch at 1.5x speed, you'd have the question "240 seconds is equivalent to some duration at 1.5 times speed":
240 = 1.5x
240/1.5 = x
160 = x
So 2 minutes and 40 seconds.

If you're asking how long the video would have to be in order for it to last 4 minutes when you watch it at 1.5x speed, you'd have the question "what duration is equivalent to 240 seconds at 1.5 times speed":
x = 240 * 1.5
x = 360
So 6 minutes.

10 minutes = 600 seconds

If you're watching at 1x speed, you're watching 1 second of video for every 1 second that passes.

If you're watching at 1.5x speed, you're watching 1.5 seconds of video for every 1 second that passes.

600 seconds / 1.5 = 400 seconds

400 seconds = 6 minutes 40 seconds

Anyway, your second response was what I was asking.

Y'know what? Since just calling people a troll and telling them they're wrong while explaining the correct answer doesn't work, how about I try something else?

So what you're trying to tell me is that 150% of 7.5 is equal to 10?
That's really what you're going with?
150% = 1.5
So you're actually claiming that 7.5 * 1.5 = 10? Really?

Go back to middle school, please.

EDIT: I phrased that horribly. lol
