Personally Im just seeing diminishing returns compared to what Im used to.

I had an NES and a Genesis as a kid, and watched the industry go from that to the N64/PS1, to the PS2/Gamecube, to the PS360

it feels like the industry is running out of unique milestones. PS4/XBONE didnt excite me, either. I mean the graphics jumps are still neat, but theres nothing that made the PS4 feel fundamentally different than the PS3 to me.

oh, except maybe the un-deletable, un-sortable apps you had to scroll through on the home screen fuck Sony lmao

Becoming more and more of just specialty budget computers with less and less exclusives each generation. Lack of investment into good launch titles. Diminishing returns on graphical improvements considering the main focus is more on doing more with the worlds and physics engines means less spectacle and wow. Everyone knows that theyll release a completely superior version within three years.

BOTW was the best launch game in a really, really long time and even that was also on Wii U.

The days of having an amazing and completely original launch game are done because games take too long to make to really take advantage of new hardware.

Nintendo probably wouldve liked to have completely shelved BOTW for the Switch but Im guessing they just couldnt pull that trigger after having already put so much time in terms of developing the game for the Wii U specifically with the gamepad.

They'd gain a lot of bad press cancelling the Wii U version after promising it for all of those years.

They actively made the Wii U version worse by removing all of the Gamepad features that were clearly supposed to be there though.

I don't think the current generation of games are going to "feel" very next gen until we completely abandon the previous gen. Most of the games out right now are cross-gen. Those 5400RPM hard drives that have been standard on game consoles has been a bottleneck for gaming for 20 years.

Scarcity, Covid restrictions, more free time, and stimmy payouts have contributed to a lot of this shit. PCs are seeing their most profitable business in 20 years because of work from home, home schooling, and just a lot more free time on their hands.

Anti-consumer practices like online paywall, raising the msrp to $69.99, and expensive storage costs is turning consumers off. US economy is in really bad shape because of inflation. People are having a hard time paying for the console/games/and other hidden fees.

The only reason I've bought one of the current consoles is because I play a lot of 360/XB1 games and the back-compat features meant I can get rid of the Xbone. I basically got XSX instead of getting a PC upgrade because graphics cards aren't worth it at the moment.

The article that was linked later on itt says they are equal in number of units, but that the PS5 has brought in the most money. I'm not sure it's an apples to apples comparison (are they adjusting for inflation?)

No games and also for the past two generations + PS2 it was better to wait and get an updated model.

Only exception to that is the 60GB PS3 with backwards compatibility but those break very easily...

When I meant it has nothing to do with supply and demand, I meant the production of the PS5. I was specifically talking about the shortage of semi-conductor chips. Regarding the sales of the PS5, I was wrong I didn't think it would sell that well given that games are now $10 more expensive and storage costs are more expensive.

Hoo boy, somebody stirred the remake beast with ArianaGrandSlam again.

On topic, I would like one for their sweet BC features, but imo Sony and MS have taken steps to make sure people who haven't upgraded don't feel screwed/left behind. In some ways, this lack of urgency has been manufactured so we feel comfortable purchasing games on our current systems, knowing there will be backwards compatibility and next gen upgrades with most of them. And STILL the PS5 is selling like hot cakes.

I'm still pretty salty about this. The Wii U and 3DS Zeldas are my favorite to play because of the second screen QoL features.

I was fortunate to get a SX at launch. I loved it the day I got it and I am still loving it. I skipped the mid-gen refresh consoles, so the SX felt like a huge step up for me. New games look great (performance finally seems to be a priority) and old games look and perform better than they did.

Im not very wrong, you dont know a damn thing. Its not superior in ANY way besides frame rate and resolution, and neither of those matter when its worse to look at than the original. The changes are SO BAD that they interfere with the very tone and lore of the game. Why is Boletaria overrun with vegetation like its been troubled for decades? Why is this utilitarian military structure now a Gothic ornate castle instead of a Romanesque fortress? Why is the music evocative of epic bombastic adventure when that is decidedly NOT the tone of Demons Souls. Its damn near changed all the way over to high fantasy from dark fantasy, its a disgrace. Look at the fucking cartoony evil gargoyles from Latria compared to their pained and weary expression from the original, look at almost EVERY SINGLE enemy design and theyre worse. New and shiny does not inherently make better, and they traded in the bleakness for making it more like Dark Souls 3 because well Dark Souls was more popular

You can tell they had no respect and you can tell they had even no huge charge for their own new vision by them half-step changing Flamelurker after complaints. If they were so confident that what they were doing was better, they would have been confident in that design. But it was just another thing to swap out to them. They dont give a shit.

Its too bad too cause Im not gonna sit here and pretend like DeS is a perfect game that couldnt have used some improvements. Its only 720p, a lot of the character models look straight out of early PS2 and theres pretty bad frame dips...but these arent improvements. Its a crime what they did to Demons Souls and its an even bigger crime that this fucked up version is the only one that will be preserved moving forward.

As someone who owns both, of the two:

Xbox Series X is by far the better console hardware and software-wise
PS5 is the only console that actually feels "next gen" due to the amazing haptic feedback and triggers on the DualSense.

Oh and one more thing. My initial argument was never about supply and demand so I don't know why your brought up S&D, I just thought the demand for the PS5 would be less because it's more expensive than the PS4 at launch, and the economy is in the tank because of COVID. It turns out the PS5 is the fastest selling console in gaming history. Also I assumed more consumers would turn to the PC for convenience, but for some reason consumers are not still exclusively gaming on the PC despite console makers continue to be more anti-consumer after every generational release.

This pretty much. I barely saw a difference between PS3 and PS4. I have zero idea what benefit the PS5 brings. I'll probably buy it someday, but for now I'll keep playing my backlog of PS4, Wii U, Switch, and PC games.
