it's about what you'd expect from these guys at this point. their last album was p bad overall with a couple decent tracks, and this song is probably in line with the better songs on that album, maybe even would fit in with the weaker tracks on We Were Dead. i know a lot of fans want a return to the crazy guitar bends and distinct Isaac Brock wailing but i wouldn't mind them doing something else as long as it isn't boring

I was thinking about how they took such a turn with Good News... I saw them live for that tour and they didn't play much from that album. I liked it, but man i miss their stuff like Lonesome Crowded West.

It's beautifully layered and all, but it's basically just a modest mouse coat of paint on a very typical pop rock structure. Like yeah, Brock and his crew are all virtuosos at this point, they can do it better than most, but why do something so boring just to show you're better?

I know it's a tired sentiment, but Modest Mouse lost the spark when Brock found his happy and stable place. Which is fine, because they put out 5 god tier albums in a row, and are immortal in the hearts and minds of music lovers. 100 years from now, if shit somehow isn't totally fucked, our children will be telling their children's cool children to listen to Modest Mouse.

This song is generic for their standards. Its fine. Thought Poison the Well song they put out a couple years ago was so much better and more interesting.

Regardless, excited to listen to a new MM album and even more excited to read about what Isaac has been up to the past few years in new press stories

i wlll say that Ice Cream Party song they released over a year ago kinda grew on me a bit. it instills some of that sense of loneliness that their older stuff did. i think the psych genre angle is one they could pull off if isaac can come up with any interesting lyrics

I liked it, but it sounds like they did away with that bit of magic they had in something like Float On, they still have that nice base but I think I really just enjoyed how much wider the songs sounded production wise in older albums

They've really gone downhill in the last few years. At this point, anything even on the level of We Were Dead...'s best tracks would be a good sign.

EDIT: Listened to the new song and it was alright. Hopefully that's not the best track they're offering!

Their first album is near perfect and was produced by Isaac Brock, it's very mid 00s and has a obvious Modest Mouse influence. They move away from that in their subsequent albums but still pretty good.

Anyone remember Wolfmother? They had a unique sound, but I could never decide if they were actually any good.

Also from a very weird and short period: Pink Spiders and Hot Hot Heat. They were trying to be as alternative as possible, but to appeal to a mainstream audience. It got weird.

Bonus points: Get Him Eat Him was like that, except underground as fuck. No MTV money.
