Verizon to offload Yahoo, AOL for $5 billion

Geez, even Yahoo sounds down on Yahoo! >_>

Verizon Communications Inc is getting rid of its media businesses that include iconic brands Yahoo and AOL for $5 billion, ending an expensive and unsuccessful run in the media and advertising world.

Despite spending more than a decade and billions of dollars building a stable of internet brands, the New York-based telecom company has struggled to make headway in a highly competitive internet advertising space dominated by Facebook Inc and Google.

Having written $4.6 billion off the value of the businesses in 2018, Verizon will get just $4.25 billion in cash from private equity firm Apollo Global, along with preferred interests of $750 million and a 10% stake in the unit - about half of what it had paid for the businesses.

The move concludes a steady drip of deals which saw Verizon sell blogging platform Tumblr in 2019 for an undisclosed sum and news website HuffPost to BuzzFeed last year.

Geez, if only somebody could have warned them that Yahoo would lose money >_>

And people will best remember Yahoo for its email service, which is probably responsible for hosting 70% of all email scams and previously made headlines over its database repeatedly being compromised (see: "Latest Yahoo data breach is rated 'E' for everyone")

Considering how few people still use Yahoo, the impact from any sale should be minor.

I still use my Yahoo email, but in a "I don't want to give you my real email address, so have this instead" way.

Honestly though, I am amazed Yahoo is still around given that all of the other sites they used to compete with in the 90's (Hotmail, Lycos, Mail.com, AOL Mail) have all long since disappeared.

I had used ymail as a back-up or for spam up until they started deleted accounts if you were inactive for a year, which resulted for some pretty much data loss for me at one point. Plus it doesn't feel like there's a lot of point in using ymail for a throwaway account, when I can just make another gmail, outlook, etc.

I still need to disassociate some of my stuff with old ymail addresses.

I still use Yahoo for email, it was my first non-student account and I just have too much stuff tied to it.
I used AOL Instant Messenger up until the day Verizon killed it, and mourned its loss.
And of course Verizon also ruined Tumblr and infamously cratered its valuation as a result.

So good to know that swath of destruction by Verizon all had a purpose for the long term. Makes it all worth it. How silly of me to ever question my corporate masters in the face of this rousing success.

People have unironically said that they should buy yahoo answers, or that yahoo answers should stay up because of them.

I only use Yahoo to check stock prices since the Yahoo Finance app was already on my phone (a verizon phone).
