Gosh, I forgot how blunt this game is.

The Phantom Ship basically spells out that Rose is the Black Monster and I think she has been killing the Moon Child every 100 years or whatever to put off some catastrophic event.

Also the cut scene that played showing Zieg turning to stone and all the fighting in the Dragon Wars was fucking gnarly. Like... the Golden Dragoon had a spike through his fucking chest and the purple one just blew himself up.

Yeah, its crazy violent (and crazy awesome) and the game basically springs it on you out of nowhere.
Just in case the growing realization that two of your party members are not what they seem wasnt enough.

Yeah I loved how the "heroes" became more gray as you saw the mythical dragoons (and humans) become more flawed.

next time i play im gonna use a cheat code to keep lavits and shana and use them instead of albert and miranda
probably use them for the final boss

Made it to Fueno with Dart and Rose. Again, love the distinct cities in the game.

Edit: LOL, I love the kid telling Rose that she has to confess to Dart.

I love the fact that Dart is kinda what I think they were going for in Squall in FF8 and failed so badly at. Reluctant hero who actually has a modicum of leadership and drive.

There we go, defeated Lenus and the Dragon and got the Dragoon Spirit for Meru.

So I'm confused. Is Lenus a Winglie and a Dragoon? Or did she just have a weird flying contraption on her?

Yes, she's both. Going by the wiki, she only gets the Dragoon spirit after her first fight.

Holy shit a couple of the critic reviews were disingenuous hell one of them is salty that another JRPG exists that isnt FF7. I mean the full review doesnt exist anymore but still.

jrpgs were just getting main stream recognition at the time and Llyod does bear a passing resemblance to Sephiroth
the death of a party member in the first disk also felt like the same story beat.
and of course things that are just jrpg/anime tropes like the childhood friend tifa/shana and the perky teenage girl yuffie/meru might have seemed like a rip off to someone not familiar with the tropes

disk 3 has some good moments but its much shorter than disk 1 2 and 4
its mainly exposition

Yeah... Rose and Meru both leave the party for LOLZ and then you get the FIRST instance of the game telling you about the Life Tree and that humans were the last fruit to fall from it.

disk 3 has the long ass explanation of the games plot and all its twist and hopes that the epic boss battle against the divine dragon will distract from how outright dull this disk ends up being

So many bad memories with glitching in the second Lenus fight. The game's jankiness is one good reason to remaster it for the current generation.

and there is that optional boss battle with the wolf that has an alternate cutscene if you have miranda instead of shana

Super Virage? At least he dies in 10 turns.

Polter Armor is cool too, with the instant kill for taking out a part of him.

Seems the Winglies ruled and were "given power" due to Frahm praying to them and they were frightened of his power? The Winglies put the gods into the Moon That Never Sets and then were defeated by the Dragoons and their Dragons?

I still am not sure if the Winglies were really bad and turned every other race into slaves or not. Stands to reason that is how they tell the story to make humans and the Dragoons look good... but who knows?

Moon Child every 108 years. They are supposed to revive the gods on earth, but the Black Monster kills the Moon Child. God stays forever in the sky and the world stays in chaos.

I forget why Rose actually does it, but I recall it isn't exactly how the legend states. I forgot there was another person who survived the destruction of Neet.

Seems Rose wanted to kill anyone who was around when the Moon Child was born or when she went around as apparently the MC turns people into evangelists for the God that the MC is supposed to awaken? So I guess the Black Monster thinks that God is bad and does not want it to ever awaken ever again.

Also, Meru just low-key ends up being a Winglie? Lol

So Meru is banished from her Winglie home because she left. And the Divine Dragon is Awakening and they are all being little bitches about it. Dragon Buster, the sword for killing dragons, is lost (Lloyd has it if I recall)

She also has a best friend who obviously wants to nail her but she ditches him again. Then we got a cut scene showing what I think is the Divine Dragon being pissed off and breaking its chains of bondage?

Oh, this is the time of the Switch to Miranda. Randomly Shana like blanks out and finds herself in the Signet Room in the castle. It was used to help bind the Divine Dragon. When in that room she loses her Dragoon Spirit to Miranda.

They make the Dragoons sound like they were each a single mythical being each, but here in this age they bounce around to everyone.

as a kid i always thought that shana's power was growing and the dragoon spirit left her because its power was incompatible with hers so it found a new master
recently ive heard another theory that shana was never meant to have the dragoons power but her own power let it harness its power for her own until it found its next rightful owner in miranda

i prefer my take better because it means that once the story is over shana could take the dragoon spirit back

The path forks at the save room before that fight. The other route leads to a teleporter that requires a puzzle to activate. Takes you right past the Virage.
