While I'm at work I have a lot of downtime so I take my Vita in. Going through Legend of Dragoon for the first time since I played it on my PS1 before the PS2 launched.

Just got done with the cutscene explaining the Dragon War Campaign from 11000 years ago.

Initial takeaways playing it as a 36 year old?

- this game is pretty grim. Lots of people talking about how the war has killed their children and parents and that they have lost all hope.

- Dart is pretty one note. He only cares about revenge on the Black Monster and basically dumping off Shana somewhere safe

- Shana wants his dick. Haaaaaard. Despite having not seen each other for 5 years which means the last time Shana saw Dart she was 12. Kinda give Dart props for being like, "Uhhh, you're being targeted by the evil baddies... and you are still kinda like a 12 year old to me? No vile WAP, let me go kill the Black Monster" Dude is 23 while Shana is a sheltered 18. I kinda respect him not really taking advantage.

- Lavitz is very charming. He is kinda like a rambunctious kid but is the most respected knight of the kingdom.

I like the little wrinkles in combat compared with its contemporaries. Defending having an actual purpose in healing is great and the Additions keep you engaged rather rather button mashing. It does mean combat is a bit slow but presents something unique.

I still really enjoy the Dragon War Campaign as a concept. They should do a PS5 remake.

She is a little stand-offish right now, but I find Shana totally insufferable at the moment. She is clingy, gets sick constantly, and everyone just kinda assumes her and Dart should bang.

Got Lavitz his Dragoon Eye. Kinda weird how this character who turned on his father just shows up without any previous info given about him and is like, "I pulled a Vegeta and went evil so I could compete with your dad. My bad" and dies.

I completely agree on this and the grim point - it was "nice" to play a game where you weren't OP out the gate and found situations you *couldn't*, felt more epic. I also really liked how the narrative around the war, Dragoons, and Winglies changed as the game went on - at first it was clear good versus evil but as the game progressed you saw the flaws in the humans/original dragoons and the positives in the winglies trying to survive

She comes across like a love sick puppy dog who is MOSTLY useless. No additions was definitely an interesting mechanic to give to the White Dragoon.

shana isnt useless though
in fact she is the second most powerful party member
you just have to use her a completely different way than you do anyone else
those attack items deal damage based on your magic stat
shana has the highest magic stat
she will destroy anything just by throwing items at it
she is also like the second or third fastest party member. i cant remmeber if haschel is faster than her or not
and speed is good cause it leads to extra turns which is one of the reasons meru is the strongest party member

Speed is broken because not only does it affect turn order, it affects how many turns you get.

I loved this game as a kid. Tried to replay it about 4 years ago before my ps3 died and I couldn't get into it again. Think I made it about 1/5 in.

Later versions (The green Greatest Hits edition) fixed about 75% of the translation errors.

It's the cheaper version of the game versus the original silver-disc, too.

I beat it way back before the PS2 released. I'm at the part where I'm gonna give Shana the White Dragoon Spirit I believe. Had the last couple days off and was playing Dark Souls instead.

I remember hearing about it for the first time when people thought my account name was a reference to it (not the case, just coincidence).

Sought it out afterwards and quite enjoyed it.

To this day I still randomly beatbox/whistle the menu screen music when I'm feeling chill.

thats meru. she is the most powerful party member due for a few reasons

• she is the fastest party member so she gets like 2 or 3 turns more than everyone else
• her magic stat is almost as good as shanas so you can have her throw items for massive magical damage as well
• and her final addition has a 600% damage multiplier making her do massive damage as well as getting more turns than anyone else

oh just should remind you in case you forgot or didnt know that as soon as you get kongol in your party go back to lohan to get his dragoon spirit from the merchant who sold you something earlier
you can get his D spirit right after he joins you
and if you dont get it at lohan you dont get it in the story until the very final dungeon

I loved this game. Back when I was playing it on the actual PS1, I never beat it but I made it to the end of the game. I just remember being lost and not knowing where to go to fight what felt like was supposed to be the final fight(s). I remember traveling the whole damn map trying to figure out how to progress. I think I was looking for a dragon on Disc 4? Or maybe just beaten a dragon? Idk it's been 20 years since then lol. I bought it on PS3 and made it to disc 2, but got too busy with college. I just started it back up on an emulator like a month ago. Didn't make it to Frugal yet though. I just missed it and wanted to start it again lol.

Yeah, he combo's up to a big blast when he targets different body parts. If you are gonna have someone not have additions, have them manipulate body parts.

It isn't too bad at the start. I think Lavitz/Albert and Haschel get some crazy long ones

but then about halfway through disk 2 everyone surpasses her and she becomes worse than everyone but kongol

Gonna go with old man Haschel for sure. Dunno who else.

I've said this before, but I accidentally did hard mode in this game as a kid because I beat the entire game with Rose and Kongol. Just because they looked the coolest.
