It can still be a classic way to meet girls for those of us who don't go out much or are no longer in school

In my line of work. 2 things. Falling asleep is easy and you gotta trust these people with your life. It honestly amazes me seeing people having long winded personal convos and joking around when realistically they wouldn't speak two words to each other if they hadn't met through this job. Like for example millenial white conservative talking and cutting up with a 69 year old black liberal all night. I've seen it and plenty of other odd combos.

Some people like to socialize I general no matter where they are.

You look EXTREMELY immature when you announce that you're about to ignore someone. No one cares, including the person about to be ignored. Just FYI.

I've made plenty of legitimate friends at work. However sometimes the forced aspect of being forced to be around people sucks and "water cooler" talk is boring AF.

If you have to work with someone 8hrs or more per day, you may as well make the best of it and keep it friendly.

When working I'd rather be on a shift with people I like for 8 hours or so a day then work in silence. It makes the day go quicker. Plus I've made acquaintances.

Nah. A happy run ship makes workers more happy and this means more work being done. People do work and talk easy enough.

  1. Because they work long hours and don't have the time and energy to go make friends on their limited "off time"
  2. Because promotions and such aren't the slightest bit merit-based, and being popular with your colleagues will help you get ahead on the totem pole
  3. Because they have lulls in the work but are still stuck there bored out of their minds, so they may as well socialize since doing stuff on their phone/computer looks like slacking off, but talking to co-workers can be framed as a "meeting" if the micro-managing supervisor shows up

In my experience, it's always been about a 65/35 split as far as people who can do both. Hell, even the people who can do both are susceptible to falling into the latter group at times. I can agree that it does help with the morale of those capable of doing both though.

That said, I'm not the norm and I border on asociality. I can happily do a full shift in silence, so I somewhat get where TC is coming from.

I'm a sociopath. 99% of the time, I do not want to be buddies with my coworkers. Please, we already spend 40+ hours a week together. I'm not your goddamn wife, leave me alone when we clock out. I think you're a sociopath if you expect every coworker to be your goddamn close companion. We don't have the same interests. No, I don't want to go out drinking. No, I don't want to sit around in your home talking about crap that I talked about as a drunk 18 year old.

Same with the break room. Can I read a fucking book without having to hear about some idiot's diet? No, apparently.
