Before I watched it, I kind of had the perception that Citizen Kane would be a very stuffy, difficult film to get through because critics fawn over it so much, but it turned out to be quite accessible and fun to watch. Kane himself isn't a very good person but I think he's well-written.

I'm perfectly capable of loving terrible people as characters, but I've never found his particular archetype that enjoyable.

There is also the movie Mank, where this is pretty much the whole plot. I have not seen that documentary though, so I'm sure it does a better job.

I actually haven't even seen Citizen Kane so I dunno how much it would hit home with me but once I finally do see it someday I'll keep this in mind.

When I was a kid, we went on a road trip through California visiting our various relatives, and Hearst Castle (which is now basically a museum) was one of the stops. Unexpectedly, I found it interesting. The swimming pool, secret doors, and the big fucking tree he flew in via helicopter were the only things i remember, but I think i still recommend it if you're looking for touristy stuff in the area
