I went to the Derby with my mother to see American Pharoh win the triple crown however many years ago. I nearly got into a fight with an old man because we were standing in "his area". Also so many people just grab the benches meant for everybody and create thier own area since they aren't bolted down and then nobody has anywhere to sit.

The food costs like 9 dollars for a white bread sandwich from a supermarket too.

Horse racing in general is kinda cruel too imo.

Horse racing is awful and cruel. Heck even HBO tried to do a show involving it and they had to cancel the show Luck before its conclusion because horses just kept getting hurt and killed.

It always seemed like a boring thing to bet on. There is no strategy or tactics. It's just beasts running really fast. Pretty much like rolling a dice.

I used to know someone who would throw Kentucky Derby parties, complete with everyone betting on horses, drinking mint juleps, and with actual Kentucky Derby-themed napkins and decorations (yes, that's a thing: http://store.kentuckyderby.com ).

I was never all that in to horse racing, though (I mostly went to those parties a few times to just hang out with friends and drink mint juleps).

That's part of the appeal. It's mostly chance, with a little bit of skill if you're actually REALLY into it and know enough about horses to personally vet every horse involved and try to calculate their chances yourself based on their breed/tendencies and past performance.

I actually know a different group of friends (apparently, I have a lot of friends who are into horse racing) who used to occasionally throw parties where they'd use an old board game thing with a track and little wooden horses to simulate horse races - you basically roll dice for each horse, and move it the same number of spaces along the track. They'd bet (usually play money, but sometimes real) on which horse was going to win each race, and they'd simulate multiple races.

Last time they did it, they had a barbecue party where lots of people where just hanging out and having fun, and about every half-hour or so they'd run a new race, and anyone who wanted to bet on it could.

I always forget the Kentucky Derby is like a national event that some people treat like the Super Bowl complete with lavish parties (maybe even more lavish), until the day it happens and I see the posts/articles about it. As far as I've seen, we really don't give a shit about the Kentucky Derby on the West Coast. It seems interest is mostly confined to the South.

That show sucked anyway, but the fact that they killed multiple horses over the course of shooting a single season and had to cancel during production of the second because they were killing more really exemplifies how combining two predatory industries is only going to compound problems.
