with super long videos.

If its a topic or activity I like, I will watch the whole 6+ hours of it.

I think people do realize this already though, and it sucks

Why would I need to watch a 90 minute video on why Mario is good or whatever. I already know that

You might be, but the algorithm isn't.

Multiple YouTubers have mentioned that there's a sweet spot for video length that determines whether or not your video will be recommended to other people, and how well it monetizes. It's somewhere between 10 minutes to 30 minutes. Anything longer or shorter hurts the creator.

Id rather have the 6 hour video has 12-36 shorter videos.

They may be okay with longer videos but those aren't as cost efficient as 10 min video

tbh, I find 4-8 minute videos hard to resist because there's very little time commitment. If something is over 20 minutes I have to think about it and if it's over 2 hours there has be a compelling reason for me to watch it if it's not a movie.

Plus generally there isn't a great reason not to break a huge video into smaller ones.

Retention would be the main argument. Most analytics suggest that views tend to fall off over time in any series of videos. The first might get 10k views, the second will only get 9k, the next 8k, and so on. Sure, that's offset by more people being willing to watch shorter videos than longer ones, but it's hard to say which option gets the worst of the trade-off.

This is also partly why some YouTubers try to avoid having "Part X" or "Episode X" in the title of their videos - people are less likely to watch multi-part series in the first place (especially if it hasn't finished yet, and you might wind up having to wait for future episodes), and they're also less likely to want to start in what they perceive to be the "middle" of a series. If "Episode 20" crops up in someone's new video recommendations, they're generally not going to be inclined to go all the way back to "Episode 1" to start watching - but they also don't want to start watching a video where they assume they'll be lost and missing context, so they just skip it entirely. An unnumbered video with just a title is more likely to trick the maximum number of potential news eyes in to see what you're offering.

Hollywood sort of has the same mentality (hence the recent trend towards naming sequels but not giving them numbers), though in both Hollywood and YouTube it has a tendency to make things even harder for potential viewers (if you DO like something enough to want to go back to the beginning and watch in order, how do you know what the order actually IS if none of the videos are numbered in any way?).
