Board 8 > Favorite PW1 witness? (Spoilers)

Apologies to the two Mike Meekins fans out there (hi Ryoko), but someone had to get cut. Penny Nichols never takes the witness stand, so she doesn't make the list either. Also not including defendants and culprits since they'll get their own poll later on. Guess I could've included Gumshoe, too, but it doesn't feel like his good moments as a witness are here. Plus, I think I'd like to restrict this to characters who are strictly witnesses instead of main characters.

Polly feels like the obvious answer here, but Cody's testimony in 1-3 is really a turning point in the game, too. It's a very strong sequence.

Was going back and forth between Cody and Polly for the reasons in the OP, then I noticed Larry was an option and I remembered just how important his testimony was.

I voted Wendy Oldbag and I was surprised it wasn't even a particularly hard choice for me

She's hilarious, yes, but on replay I am always impressed that her story is actually sad underneath it all, and there's a reason why she is the way she is.

It's got to be Polly.

That's arguably the defining moment of the entire series. You could argue that one of the factors that led to Ace Attorney blowing up in the west was because it was the crazy lawyer game where he questions a god damn parrot during court.

Cody Hackins, I think! Not so much because he's the best character (tho not a bad character at all!), but more because the [first] good plot twist in the series involves his testimony.

Voted for Cody.

Polly's a great moment and I don't begrudge the votes she's getting, but isn't really a character. Larry's also great, but honestly voting for him feels like cheating: I like Larry a lot but he's not a one-off witness, he's a defendant + significant plot player.

Cody is not only absolutely hilarious in investigations (I love his reaction when Phoenix tries to "trade" him his own card), but his testimony is the point when I realized I loved this series. Can't ever forget that.

Wendy's good too! When I replay this game I'm struck how she's actually better in this game than her other appearances; not that she isn't funny in later games (as she is here), but PW1 is where she definitely feels like less of a caricature and more of a complete character, who's allowed to be serious on occasion too.

And an honourable mention to Jake Marshall. I'm the opposite of a 1-5 fan but he was great, both for the character concept and some amazing animations.
