i haven't owned an xbox since 360, and even then i found it odd you had to spend extra money to have chargeable controllers. i figured for sure the x1 generation would have done away with that, so i didn't even consider it a thing when i was buying my series x. yet here we are. just opened my new series x and out fell two AA's when opening the controller bag, ok?

seriously, every single other console has rechargeable batteries, ok?

It's absolutley the best system. You can use regular AA, you can use rechargeable AA you may already have, you can buy a play and charge battery very affordably. Are the PlayStation and switch batteries even user changeable?

The PS4 controllers are notorious for losing their battery life pretty quickly, so I prefer being able to use batteries. Not sure if Sony fixed the rechargeable battery issue on the PS5 controller, but fuck Sony.

If my wireless Xbox controller batteries go dead (or the battery pack, which finally happened with my 360 one), then I can just pop in a couple rechargables.

If a wireless Playstation controller battery goes dead, you either have to keep it plugged in (which defeats the purpose of a wireless controller) or buy a new one. It's a really good scam.

this just might be one of those things that i'm out of touch with. the xbox boards overwhelmingly liked the fact that xbox had removable batteries. i think it's obnoxious, but i may just be on the wrong side of the issue. it really does sound like way more people do want the option, so fair enough, ok?

Generally speaking, most rechargeable controllers have more than enough battery life to last for a whole session. If you have to stop and charge, it's typically going to be because you didn't recharge them when you weren't playing. Exceptions exist, such as the WiiU gamepad, or if the battery's lost its ability to hold a charge, but for the most part, replaceable batteries just end up being an extra cost for very little benefit.

I think that's dumb but people have raised some good points here. But at the very least I feel like MS should include the rechargeable pack with the controller and you can switch to plain AAs if you want, instead of it being the other way around

why though
Because u can switch them out with recharagble aas easily without having to charge the controller via usb.
Also batteries die over time and no longer hold charge. In such an occurance its easier to pickup new rechargeable aas next time you're at the grocery than order new ps4 batteries online and wait for them to arrive and open up the whole controller to change them.

Also Xbox contolers can be played without batteries by being plugged in to usb. So there is really no down side to it.

On one side of the coin replaceable batteries are great as I wouldn't need a new controller if the battery died. On the other side of the coin however changing batteries pisses me off.

Agreed. And since I already use rechargeable batteries for other devices it wasn't even an extra expense. I already had several sets of batteries and the charger.

You do know having batteries is better than inbuilt chargers right?
1: If its inbuilt it can explode over time. Look up PSP or such
2: Batteries are replacable.

There. People who prefer inbuilt chargers are the real suckers actually.

For a good reason. Batteries can be replaced so it lasts a life time. But inbuilt can explode over time. If anything, the question is, why hasnt this become more popular? It lasts forever and is better overall. If they want chargable batteries it can be bought seperately. And then you can get real batteries later if it becomes obsolite. Its actually Xbox who is the winner here

I think it's overall better to have rechargeable packs. Yes they can eventually die but rechargeable ones last longer overall. I don't know how much more of an environmental cost they are compared to regular ones, but I'd have to assume the lifecycle more than makes up for it. The real annoyance is with other controllers not making the battery easy to access. But MS should ship controllers with packs at least. I bet some people who get xboxes don't even realize they make separate packs as an accessory.

Controller that can use rechargeable AA while also being able to recharge those AA by plugging it in
