I've never understood how people didn't see the writing on the wall for Season 8's badness in Season 7. That season sucks almost as much.

I feel like it got worse and worse so slowly that it was hard to notice. There were definitely more bad parts as it went on.
Well, yes, but I also feel like they raised the production bar by a lot and it made for more epic episodes here and there
I hated Dorne and I hated the High Sparrow storylines (besides how the High Sparrow one ended, which was great)
I also thought Ramsay totrute overstayed it's welcome
But we still got episodes like Hardhome, Battle of the Bastards, The Door, Winds of Winter etc
The real story problems started in Season 7 (besides Stannis, which started in S6) but we still got great episodes like The Spoils of War

Also I noticed that the Littlefinger death episode got 9.4 in IMDB and this is so damn stupid what the fuck are those people thinking
That episode was a disgrace
Killing the main mastermind of the whole show so easily just because Brian has map hack is so lame

i had a lot of hope that S7 was a "moving parts" season, overlooked/rushed because of frenetic pacing, but with a clear endgame

whoops

I would have been fine with some of the middle stuff being crap if the big moments continued to pay off like that.

There was a hope that it'd be the slow descent of a glide, or at least things would even out into mediocrity.

Like, with a show like Lost, as long as you aren't incapable of understanding the parallel storyline in season 6, it's watchable and doesn't tear down everything that came before.

GoT just feels like watching the most magnificent card tower getting trucked down after they spent a few years making mediocre structures around the central tower. Nobody cared about the little houses, but that's where they put all their effort. And they carelessly took down the main event instead of finishing it off in a satisfying, or hell, even an uninteresting way.

I felt like the shittyness was an acceptable level of "well, these clowns clearly have no idea how to fill in the blanks" right up until they had their little expedition to capture a wight. Not only did nothing about that plan make any fucking sense, but the sheer level of logic ignoring teleportation completely ruined any immersion the show had. There was not a single redeeming quality in the last 2 seasons (except perhaps the attack on the carriage train), but that episode is what finally killed the last shred of "maybe they can still pull this off".

The "Brienne becomes a knight" scene was good, but it was the only good thing in the season.

why not instead give adaptations to series that didn't shit the bed in both book and show form?

I actually think Season 8 of GoT is better than Season 7 outside of the part where a dragon attacks the convoy. Season 7 was REALLY bad.

Aside from the fact that GRRM will probably never finish them, I feel like complaints about the books have gotten massively overblown since the show ended so panned. Feast and Dance have issues to be sure, but even they were considerably better than the corresponding S5 material when I stopped watching. I don't think it's at all unfair to say the only thing better from that season than book material was Hardhome.

Does anyone else think Bronn was meant to die during the convoy attack in season 7? I think he was set up to die there, but the showrunners changed their minds at the last minute because he was too much of a fan favourite.

They even had the symbolism going there: Bronn started out in season 1 as some nobody plucked from obscurity by Tyrion, and from there he's kept climbing in influence, prestige and money. If he can't beat an opponent fairly, he'll either play dirty or bail. When the Wildlings attack the convoy, they're the first foe Bronn can't beat, trick or buy off, and he can't run away from them either despite his efforts. In other words, he's screwed. He even drops the sack of gold he was holding at the time, which I took as him going back to being a nobody with nothing just before his death.

Also worth noting, the convoy is the last notable event Bronn is involved in. In the second half of season 7, he's just there (he doesn't even take part in the big scene where almost all the surviving characters meet, he leaves just before it begins). Season 8 seemed to set up a subplot involving him, but nothing comes of it, and he reappears in the epilogue. You could take him out of the story after the convoy and barely anything would change, certainly nothing important, which makes me think he wasn't meant to be there in the first place.

I don't expect him to finish if he couldn't wrap up Winds during this past year of all times, but it's not 100% until...it is.

I'm a fan of the books but I have to say the show has soured me on the possibilities of Winds/Dream, if they ever came out (doubtful) I'd still read them but unless the show just straight up made everything up I'm not a fan of where it leads.

There are longstanding rumours Lena Headey had it in her contract that she not be in a scene with Jerome Flynn, which would explain his weird exit there. But overall I agree, they just kept Bronn in because they liked him.

I mean they already departed heavily from book material when they had book material left. It's why Melissandra manages to walk all the way back to the Wall by herself in blizzard conditions in no time at all in the show because that's where she was the entire time in Dance and then "oops we need her here".

If anyone likes Chapo Trap House, Felix and Matt have a side podcast called Time for My Stories and they just released a Game of Thrones ep.

Its a good discussion, they talked about how the series finale is basically the last cultural event that the entire country interpreted the same.
