being culturally isolated makes their echo chamber louder

How culturally isolated do you have to BE to think that the nazi's, the one people group so terrible that both communists and capitalists came together in unity to say 'fuck those guys' are anything less than reprehensible. I think there are child cannibal murder-rapists with better PR.

that's geopolitics at work, not morality

germany kind of stupidly invaded russia invalidating their nonaggression pact; russia was content to just not fight them in exchange for some eastern european territories including east poland

There was genuine concern in Germany that the Soviet Union would break the pact first, and that they needed to be the aggressive ones.

It's worth noting the pact was incredibly unpopular in both Germany and the Soviet Union. The nations hated each other and war between the two was largely seen as inevitable.

With the benefit of hindsight it was probably a bad move, though arguably invading Poland go begin with was a gross misstep.

It was more that they grossly underestimated thier foe. Germany was taking country after country. They even took france, which held out the entirety of WW1, so thier spirits where high. And the soviet union failed to invade finland, finland for crying out loud, so the germans felt the soviets were weak and easy pickings and they did pretty good in the eastern front, but like napoleon before they couldn't finish the last leg and froze and starved in the russian winter.
