I try not to go on social media too much. I always end up feeling unproductive when I'm on it more than I should.

I do like social media. It can be fun. And it's a great way to connect with family and friends. But yeah, it's very easy to get sucked in if you're not careful. It can be a huge time suck. You're better off doing something beneficial and productive.

a bit ironic that she's using social media to express that it sucks tbh...

either way, i dont see a problem with social media itself but more how people use it.

This seems to be the general consensus.

Lot of good. But also a lot of bad.

Social media had so much promise and really could have been a great type of platform.

but like all things; it gets corrupted.

marketing and special interest groups get involved. Becomes echo chambers of hate and stupidity.

its definitely caused a lot of division amongst many people.

that being said - it still has uses but not enough to fix the problems.

It does suck. The Internet has repeatedly proven that the worst of humanity is exposed when you can just sit behind a computer and type things. It's detrimental to mental health because most people are just browsing around looking for the high of getting in fights. Imagine walking around in real life trying to get into a big argument with every single stranger you walk past, that shit wears you down.

I'm hoping people eventually get sick of it and move on but it's like fighting against the power and wealth of Amazon: everyone complains about it, but everyone uses it and doesn't change any of their habits.

she is right. it is one of the several causes of decline in our civilization.
but if it is to exist, it should be relegated to what red light districts have existed for. a place only people of low character would ever go to.

She's right but she's also part of the same braindead culture she's criticizing.

That therapy session she had filmed for everyone to watch and mock was absolutely the dumbest voluntary thing anyone has ever done.

Yeah it got bad once it got aggressively monetized and started having brands/political pages invade, and being all about data mining algorithms that feed "engaging" content regardless of its veracity. It used to be alright when it was mainly just regular people sharing what was going on in their lives. The problem is how do you sustain that? You'd have to use a subscription model if you don't use a data mining model, and idk how much people would be willing to pay.

I'd maybe pay $5 a month for something like 2007-era FB, but I don't know if I'd go much higher, and that's probably way less than they make doing what they do now.

Its a double edged sword. Its a great tool. Unfortunately people misuse it and take the wrong things from it. That needs to be regulated by the companies.

Well, the rise of social media has given rise to the steady erosion of online privacy, encouraged social echo chambers which inherrently inspire radicalization, allowed such echo chambers to spread misinformation totally unchecked, and ignited a modern rendition of classical "mob rule." Its at the very least correlated with documented widespread declines in overall mental health, and extracts a hefty amount of social energy and attention.

Its also inspired new methods of social connection and encouraged communication on a worldwide level in an unprecedented way. Its allowed for faster spread of information than any other platform, even online. Its provided careers and livelihoods to a not-insignificant number of people. Its directly led to the exposure and crackdown of many vile people and events throughout the world.

These are all just things I'm rattling off the top of my head, but the pro/con list is exhaustive on both ends. Social media has really completely reinvented how people engage with the world, and I think its still too young to say one way or the other whether that's good or bad long term. Its a monumental shift. I will say that some of its negatives need to be reigned in for us to really see its full potential.

Yes, actually. Humans seem more depressed and anxious than ever before, and part of it is this constant need to perform in front of the audience of social media. YouTube, twitch, etc. cause the same issue.

Back in the day nobody was visible 24/7. Hell, before the 2000s most people didn't even have a cell phone. If you weren't at home, nobody could call you or send you a message. There were clear lines between "available" and "not available."

Nowadays, everybody is expected to be available at all times. It's exhausting, and growing up like this must be severely strenuous.

She isn't wrong.

Sad to see what could've been great ruined by companies, fake news, "The Alorithim", echo chambers and people's self worth/validation (from companies telling them so) all getting involved, but they are so deeply entrenched it's ruined now.

Too much misinformation and echo chambers for sure. This was not what the internet was made for. The internet was supposed to be a place for unlimited information, but I guess the weakness came from the people that used it, not the platform itself.

Why the fuck is her age relevant to the story?

I don't get that about these kinds of things they'll be like Katy Perry, the X year old.

And it's not like they are like Katy Perry, the white X year old, heterosexual woman who has an income of Y a weight of Z and a sexual history of A, who has the following medical conditions: etc

Why is somebody's age both relevant and somehow the only bit of relevant information to literally every story?

Yikes

This attitude is why I stay away from social media and detest it myself. Not that I want to single you out with this but I hear a lot people act like digging up someones Facebook page gives them a window into that persons soul or true nature

That is, the fake profile on social media, a fabrication of that persons superego, is perceived as more real than the actual person it represents. The emergence of the so-called hyperreality.

Needless to say, I agree with Katy Perry on this one.
