It's likely hunting the many mice and rats that are attracted to the chicken area. People don't think of owls in tropical areas but a lot of random exotic birds either pass through these islands on migration route or settle to roost. So one time I got up and saw an owl perched high up on a telephone pole outside my house. He stayed around for a week or so up in the coconut trees.
