When my little sister was 12 or 13, she read a lot of YA, fantasy, magic-based fiction.

"Oh, you'd like Harry Potter." - my boomer/millennial ignorance

Nah she didn't like it. None of her friends do

Maybe fantasy is cyclical. Try LotR or Narnia.

She's reading my LotR books now, funny you should mention that. Liked The Hobbit (she's 14 or 15 now, we have a huge age gap in my family), started Fellowship

I was born in 2000. I've played pretend on the playground with HP spells before. I didn't read the HP books but a lot of people my age, especially girls, did.

Saying millennials are into HP is like saying Boomers probably like The Beatles.

No shit Sherlock. These are things that happened during their formative years.

Ive seen plenty of Zoomers that like HP. So why they wanna draw a line in the sand is beyond me.

It's a good thing from that small sampling you can extrapolate that all Zoomers hate HP >_>

Uh.......

Anyway, I never got into Harry Potter, either. Everybody in my school became obsessed with it, but I never felt the pull.

I'm wondering if they were so influential that all the clichs and motifs were hashed out a million times by knockoffs ... then zoomers don't know they were the origin of it

They have zero clue. Until they have a generational author I won't be giving them any sort of attention. Even King acknowledges that Rowling can write.

The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, being trained to read Stephen King.

I wonder how much that's influenced by the books originally getting more mature with the audience. Like... kids who read the first book were adults when the last came out, and the subject matter got darker somewhat to reflect that.

As a complete series you can run through in a week it's gotta be somewhat tonally inconsistent. Adults will first the first books too kiddy and kids may find the later books too dark.
