If you don't have 360k saved up by the time you're out of middle school, you're never gonna make it

Fidelity tells me I should have double my salary in my retirement account by age 35.

I got a long way to go.

with equity markets as overheated as they are now, no amount is likely enough, and people starting to save now probably will see rather poor returns over the next decade

I like to keep enough in my bank accounts to survive one year without income though most sources will say only six months.

Anything past that goes to my Roth IRA up to 6k per year. I also have forced contribution to retirement from my paychecks (gov employee), so Im putting money away into two accounts. Anything left over from that is fun money and I treat myself to nice things. I also have a standard brokerage account but Im just growing that with trading and not allocating any additional principal currently.

Should?

Doesnt this vary depending on lifestyle and necessities?

A single guy with no kids who rents/leases everything doesnt need thousands in the bank, he can just live it up as he sees fit.

shouldn't be more than is necessary to cover expenses for the next 3-6 months, 12 months at an extreme

everything else should be tied up in investments

this is hard to say. Based on the standard of living, if you are single (live at home or paying rent) or married

1-2 years' salary. Given global uncertainty, you might want to go to 3-4 years' salary, unless you're living well below your means.
